I am a new PowerDirector customer (i installed version . This question must be so basic I'm almost embarrassed to ask. I downloaded some audio files (MPEG-4) from iTunes and then imported them into PowerDirector but they don't seem to play. I've been editing video successfully in the tool and wanted to add a soundtrack. Doesn't everybody use iTUnes files for this? What am I missing??

Hi weckerson,

One of the reasons that might be causing this, is that the audio file you are trying to import, is probably “copyright protected”.
There are ways [so I’ve heard ], to get around this copy protection, but I will leave that for you to research, should you want to pursue it.

If however, copy protection is not the issue, the problem may be with a missing audio codec, or a codec that PD doesn’t recognize. So you might try to simply convert your audio file to a .wma or .wav audio file.
A very good, and very free audio file conversion program can be found here...

Are the audio files protected? Most unprotected audio that I have gotten from iTunes has been MP3 from free podcasts. If I remember correctly, the portected files have a m4a extension and can only be played in iTunes.

EDIT: You beat me!

I'll throw a bit in too...

Cranston & Jaime are on the money. I use iTines as my main music library. Here's what I do and it's never resulted in any such problem:

1. In iTunes, go to Edit > Preferences > General > click on Import Settings > Select MP3 encoder or WAV encoder. Click OK a couple of times.
2. Now music that's in your library may already be in a variety of formats. Select the track you want to use.
3. Right click on it & select "Create MP3 version" (or WAV).
4. Drag the converted file to the desktop (or wherever you want). It copies the file. iTunes does what other conversion software does (as long as your preferences are set as described above).
5. In PD, import the converted file.

Hope that helps - Tony

You guys are right! The iTunes files are protected! Duh.... Why does Apple do that? Especially, after you pay for the files?

Anyway, I found software the converts protected files. It's called TuneBite. But I just read the great comment above about letting iTunes convert it for you! That saved me $40! THANKS!

Tony, thanks for that tip. I'm also a big iTunes fan, but previously if I wanted to use a tune in my library that was protected, I would repurchase it in iTunes plus format. Great tip, thanks.

**UPDATE** spoke too soon, doesn't work w/protected files, but still appreciate the tip. Sore subject as I have over 3000 purchased tunes and Apple wants >$800 to upgrade my library! They know how to treat a customer, NOT!
