Trial Ver, Do I need video card? Cannot render to mp4 or select Hardware Video Encoder
[Post New]
I'm likely to buy PowerDirector 10.
Using Win7 x64 with video built into the motherboard an Asus P8Z68V.

I am unable to render a trial video to mp4 or H.264.
It will not let me select Fast Video rendering technology or Hardware video encoder and says I need to check if my video card supports the format.

Are these features unavailable because I am using the trial version?
Do I have to buy a video card to use Power Director and convert to mp4 or any other format?
Eventually I will get a video card, what cards are recommended?

Hardware video encoding uses the graphics card, so if you card is not supported with the proper software installed, it will not be available to you. You can still use PowerDirector, but it will use your CPU instead, and will probably produce slower in most cases. __________________________________

Look at the bottom for supported cards. Mine is not on there, but still works. However, it is really not fast enough anymore. __________________________________

Oh, I see. HD and some MP4 video is not an option in the trial. Really a shame, since that is really what needs to be tested by new users. __________________________________

Unfortunately it doesn't say this option is unavailable in the trial version so it is confusing. All that happens is a text box pops up saying:

Bob.
If you go to Asus website and locate support see what the specs say about graphics installed, then go support and see if there is an update, they may have a link for latest drivers from the graphic card manufacturer (possibly Nvide/Geforce) then get the latest drivers downloaded.

Jim,
Thanks but the Bios is updated to the latest version. I cannot update or install a driver for Nvidia or ATI because I do not have a Nvidia or ATI graphics card installed on my computer. The graphics is built into the motherboard. I can make movies just fine using Pinnacle Studio. However I have to upgrade Pinnacle to use MTS files and make HD movies. And I am not completely happy with Pinnacle. So therefore I am trying Power Director. But it will not let me make an HD movie to try it out. Even one with the watermark logo in it just to try it. Bob424 I have made a few mp4 HD video with PowerDirector 10 Ultra it works great. I was looking at your motherboard and if you have a i5 or i7 sandy bridge in it you will be in great shape. If I did look at the right board heres the one I look at.

Mike,
I have the i7 so I expect it will do a good job.

So, it seems that the reason I am unable to make an HD movie is because this is the trial version. I was under the impression that it was almost full featured but caused a watermark.

After only playing with it for one day, I am impressed and will start shopping around for a good price on it.

This is the best I've seen published on what the trial version is capable of. Some areas leave a lot to guess between the lines.

Restrictions of H.264 video in PowerDirector Trial version:
H.264 video import or output in the trial version is limited to PCs with hardware acceleration.

•To import H.264 (MTS, M2TS, MOV, MP4) video, a graphics card that supports H.264 decoding is required.
•To output H.264 (AVC H.264, MPEG-4) video, a graphics card that supports H.264 encoding is required.
•You can output non-HD progressive H.264 (AVC H.264, MPEG-4) video using the Windows 7 built-in H.264 encoder if the graphics card does not support H.264 encoding.
If you are not able to output H.264 video, please contact your graphics card vendor and check if the card supports H.264 hardware encoding.

Note: the full versions of CyberLink PowerDirector Ultra and Deluxe include software decoders/encoders for H.264 video files.

I'm just enough nerd to be dangerous. So let me recap and you can tell me if I've gone wrong.

When I get the full (non-trial) version of Power Director 10 all restrictions go out the window. I can use my system as setup, without a graphics card, and output HD, MTS, H.264 or whatever other format I choose.

You can enter in a coupon code during the purchase of power director 10, enter the code PCMAG and you will get 10% off. I believe it's good through 15 February. You might find an even better deal elsewhere but I just thought I would point this out. The bundled package includes the romance pack volume 3 and a $40 coupon for some video loops.

Best,

Kevin

I obviously won't touch that statement with a 10 foot pole! I'm simply an editor and can not claim anything about CL product capability on various platforms and/or hardware.

This post is pretty informative of a few users with sandy bridge http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/15866.page maybe it will gain some confidence for you. Early on I remember reading several issues, CL posted a patch for PD9 on 2011-06-10 to address and add support, roll over the "i" and see. http://www.cyberlink.com/downloads/support/powerdirector/patches_en_US.html

I use a video card on all my platforms so I offer no 1st hand experience.

I well say that I have a Dell laptop with the Intel HD Graphics in it. It has the i5 sandy bridge and I trun on the Intel Quick Sync Video in Produce. That took a lot of work off the CPU. With it off CPU would hit 97%. With it on the CPU would run 25% to 50%. . I don't have that option on my i7 desktop but it's not a sandy bridge. It's the i7 860. with a Nvidia Geforce.

Has for the MP4 HD it show setting for 720p and 1080p settings but I see nothing about the h264 in it. I have use both the mp4 and the H.264 AVC for a 720p video the same one and they look the same when I play them to me. Intel i7 5960X overclock to 4 Ghz 16 GB of ram.

I am just trying TRIAL version and I am a little bit confused. This is how I understand this limitations:
1. If you your video card SUPPORT hardware encoding/decoding H.264, TRIAL version WILL import/export H.264 video. If your video card DOESN'T support hardware encoding/decoding H.264, you have to buy FULL version (with software support of H.264).
2. If you use Windows 7, you can (only) export H.264 even if your video card DOESN'T support hardware encoding/decoding H.264.

Can anybody confirm this (English is not my native language)?

If all above correct, how to explain why TRIAL version refuse to import H.264 in my project although my card (ATI HD 5850) support hardware encoding H.264? (My PowerDirector 8 works fine with hardware video encoding.)
Am I missing something?

Well, I ordered Power Director 10 Ultra so I'll have it in a few days. Looking forward to it as it seems to have a lot of different features than Pinnacle. Obviously there will be a lot of learning to do because it seems that this program can be used by a professional as well as the amateur.

My friend has a GoPro and I loved the videos he made from our ATV trips. My avatar is of me standing by Lunar crater in the middle of Nevada.

Quick question. Do I uninstall the trial version before installing my purchased version? Or do I just install it over the top of the trial? Use your computer to cure Cancer and Aids http://wcgrid.org

Branislav 2 - That is saying that your graphics card must support h.264 for PowerDirector to import or export in that format. However, if your graphics card does not support h.264, but you have Windows 7 installed, you can export videos to h.264 in standard definition, but not high definition. Does that clear it up?

Quick question. Do I uninstall the trial version before installing my purchased version? Or do I just install it over the top of the trial?

It is generally considered to be better to uninstall the trial version first. Either way should work. __________________________________
