Trouble with MP4 60 fps videos

I have a new JVC PICSIO GC-FM2 - http://camcorder.jvc.com/product.jsp?modelId=MODL028751&pathId=58&page=10

I am having all sorts of problems with PD8 v3022 and the PISCIO’s MP4 videos. They are 1280x720 59fps. A short file is attached.

When I try to import this file I get “PD8 has stopped working” error msg. with the following details.

Other times I can import these MP4 files, can view them in PD8, but get the error when I try to produce one.

I have un-installed PD8 twice (with REVO).. same results… Also tried the trial version of PD9… with similar results.

I have Windows 7 32 bit (up to date), 3 GB ram – over 2GB free when this error occurs.

Any help would be appreciated.

Note: MP4 files @ 30fps work fine.

I wonder what triggered the error.

I don't have a "tested" answer for you as I no longer have PD8 installed - it's an "old program now"

I suggest you:
1. Uninstall QuickTime.
2. Follow the directions here - written for PD9. http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/15688.page

3. Download the latest full build of QT from Apple's website and install when you've carried out the above.

4. You should have at least 4GB of ram in a 32bit system editing HD/720p

5. A diagnostic file http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/7958.page Part B would show members whether you have uptodate VGA/GPU drivers and the capability of your graphics card. This is really essential information.

The issue is unlikely to be the .mp4 format. PD8 was created before many of the HD cameras - should be ok with 720p but might struggle. I would suggest you think about improving your PC and stepping up to PD9.

Thank you very much for your reply. I will investigate the steps you suggested.

Could you please try my file on your PD9... I already have tried PD9 (under a trial) and it would not even import this file.

Also, if other members on this forum with PD8 would try this file it would be great. If your PD8 imports it and then a "produce" try doesn't shut down PD8, I will know the problem is at my end and not a short-coming of a 60 fps .MP4 file and PD8.

Hi Bill,

Your clip crashes both PDR9 (Win7 64bit) & PDR8, (Win7 32bit) PowerDirector just shuts down as soon as I try to import the clip, so I don't think it's a Quicktime issue. I also shoot in 1280x720 60fps with a Sanyo HD1010 and have no problem importing. The MediaInfo file on your clip is almost identical to mine. The issue then is with your clips, not PowerDirector.
Maybe others can offer a solution for you

Thank you so much for your input.

These clips do work in any media player I have plus AVS editor, AVS converter, or remaker. Also they work in Windows Live Movie Maker.

At least I know now that it's not my system or "missing some codec etc.".

This camera is new and I hope a solution surfaces. I do like the format.

Do you have a little longer clip? I've noticed on some other work that clips right at 1sec cause PD to bomb. Sometimes PD gives a warning about clips being shorter that 1 second but not always. Not sure if the warning depends on media type. Media Info indicates the duration is 1s 2ms which might be marginal based on some issues I've had. How about a 3-5 second clip just to be sure.

Here's a 6 second clip... it crashed my PD8 like all the others from this camera. While I thought the crashes were related to the 59 or 60 fps, I also have 960x540 29 fps .MP4 from the same camera that also crashes my PD8. I have a working .MP4 file that was generated with PD8 a year ago that still works ok in PD8.

Crashed my PD8 install too. I suspect maybe something with this particular MP4 container that PD does not like. As Robert indicated, the audio and video mediainfo details are very similar to things PD has handled in the past for me. For what it's worth, I remuxed with a utility to a TS stream and a m2ts stream and both played and edited fine in PD8.

Haven't got my PD8 fired up, but just for the record it crashes PD9 2930 on Win 764bit and XP 32bit. It does open up in a competitor software OK.

Thanks Jeff & Adrian,

I agree with you.. It does seem to be PD8&9.. Everything else I have is OK with these files... There are just too many variations to deal with.

This particular MP4 format seems to give give video at reasonable file size. I don't think I always want the 60 fps but when I try to reduce it to 30.. (Windows Movie Maker) with a .wmv format the size of the file only reduces by 20%. Where might there be a good forum, non specific to Cyberlink, to get good technical answers to many questions I have about the different video file formats.

I have posted a PD8 question in a new post... any help there would be appreciated.

Hi Dafydd,

I'm not sure to whom I should direct this request, if it is not yourself would you please forward it to the proper person.

Myself and several other PD8 & 9 users have had errors when importing or producing these .MP4 files. I have been able to view them with any media viewer I have, import, edit and produce them with WMM, and any of the AVS series of programs so just saying it's the file format being new and it's not a Power Director issue seems too short of an answer. I would prefer to use PD8 (PD 9 isn't that much different for a 32 bit machine) rather than the AVS or WMM editors.

How about a fix for both PD8 & PD9??

By now you may have tried the file on your version.... how did it work???

I get similar problems with 960x540 30 fps .MP4 files from the same camera.

Hi Bill,

Downloaded your clip and was able to import into PD8 and edit and produce it to an mpg file. I was able to add two effects to it, also. I didn't have any issues with PD8 version 3022. Sorry.....

My version number for SE_CLMediaDetect.dll is 1.1.0.6104 found in C:\Program Files (x86)\Cyberlink\PowerDirector\runtime\SEditorX, maybe the dll file needs registered in Windows??

The "crash" vote rises!!!.

So far Dave is the only one that can import and produce this file. I just uninstalled PD8 and all reg entries associated with it... uninstalled Quicktime, uninstalled codec that I had installed, restarted.. then re-installed PD8, then updated QT to 7.7.. no produce.. then updated PD8 to 3022, no produce. Installed the content pack, still no produce. Reinstalled Windows escentials codecs.. still no produce.

It would be very interesting to know if Dafydd can import and produce with his PD9...

That's interesting, On my laptop I have PDR8 Build 3022, which is the latest build, yet, my version No. for SE_CLMediaDetect.dll is 1.1.0.6024 dated 7/01/2010, could you check your version number again please Dave456.

It just seems strange to have 2 different versions of the .dll if the builds are the same, maybe that is the issue, only CyberLink R & D can advise on that.
