PowerDirector 9 Ultra - final production seems "jerky"

I recently loaded PD 9 Ultra on my new PC (Windows 7, 64-bit, 1Tb HD, 4Gb RAM) and after many program crashes, freezes and other failures I finally managed to produce a video which I was happy to burn to DVD. My camera is a Canon HG10 so I set up the programme's Producer to burn a DVD to create a AVCHD, 1920x1080p disk at 16 speed. For some reason, though, the end result is slightly "jerky" in places.

So, first experiences of PD 9 Ultra are not encouraging. Do I need more RAM? I would have thought 4Gb would have been enough, but I'm no expert.

Any comments / advice gratefully received. Happy to provide any other info about the editing / production / process which I used if this helps.

Many thanks.

Bob

Hi,
I would suggest more RAM 4GB is the minimum amount if you do any serious effects, titles etc. I have got 12GB installed on my Windows 7 64bit machine.

Thanks Jim, I'm beginning to think that may be the answer. It would certainly explain all the crashes and freezing up.

Cheers.

Hi kingbee,
Please provide a diagnostic file and members will be able to help you a bit more.

see: http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/7958.page
Part A & B please.

I'd also suggest you may need to lower the preview resolution, putting less strain on your GPU (which the diagnostic will tell us what you have).

Hi,
The way I understand Windows 7 Premium 64Bit is that a large portion of memory is retained by windows to keep it going and the remaining is for programs ( and with the 64bit system some mem is for 32bit apps and that only utilises 4MB as before) and the 64 bit side utilizes up to 32, so on a 4MB system not much left.

Jim: I presume you mean "GB" not "MB". Not to many 4MB RAM machines around these days, though I am old enough to remember when you paid more to go from 512KB to 640KB!

Have a great day.

Hi Kingbee,

Your jerkiness may be that you shot your video at 25 fps (1080i50) and you have rendered in 24p hence a frame rate discrepancy. It is usually noticeable on panning shots. Panasonic SD9, Panasonic TM700, Panasonic SD600, GoPro HD Hero.

Hi all

In fact, I've uninstalled PD 9 while I think about what I'm going to do next. I might even just bin PowerDirector and go for Pinnacle Studio 15 or something like that. See, PD 9 Ultra requires 6Gb DDR2 of RAM, while Pinnacle needs only 2Gb. I could get an extra 2, or even 4, Gb of RAM put into my new machine but the guy who built it (only a month or so back) considers that my current RAM (4Gb) should handle AVCHD editing relatively easily (although I note Jim's further comments on that), and suggested Pinnacle also. Trouble with Pinnacle is, it doesn't always get the best reviews.

Any further thoughts most welcome. Dafyyd, if I re-install PD, I'll do as you suggest but I'm kinda disillusioned right now ....

Bob

Thanks.

Are you saving it as 50P or 25P?

Hi,
Well I have Pinnacle studio, Corel Video X3, NeroHD Platinum and still prefer Cyberlink PowerDriector. None of the Pinnacle or Corel programs came close to the effects and editing that Cyberlink is capable of achieving. But I must admit Corel Video X3 I did not install on my Windows 7 Premium 64bit machine.
p.s. I do have CorelDraw X3 for vector work

Sorry Dafydd, and to others who have made helpful suggestions - now back at work so won't be able to give this the attention I would like. I will get back to it soonest, though, but probably not before the weekend. If this thread drops off the radar meantime I'll PM as necessary.

Please be patient, and thanks for all the helpful advice thus far.

Bob

Hello again, Dafydd. I think what was confusing me was, the attachment option is not given with PMs. Had I chosen to contact you via the forum, I would have spotted the box below!

Anyway, here are the promised files. Many thanks again for your help.

Best wishes.

Bob

Hi,
I read the Dxdiag64 bit file and it seems ( I could be wrong tho') that the Graphic accelerator is running in 32 bit mode, but I could be wrong, hence the jerky motion.I am not familiar with ati cards tho. I would visit the ATI graphics accelerator driver website and check if you card supports 64bit processing.

Hi Bob,
Driver File Version: 8.17.0010.1070 (English)
Driver Version: 8.831.2.0
DDI Version: 11
Driver Model: WDDM 1.1
Driver Attributes: Final Retail
Driver Date/Size: 3/9/2011 05:55:52, 795136 bytes

You need to update your drivers. Please read the guide information provided by Fred. http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/14275.page

I see you have:
Haali Media Splitter,0x00800001,0,1,splitter.ax,1.10.0348.0015
Haali Media Splitter (AR),0x00400000,1,1,splitter.ax,1.10.0348.0015

installed on your system. in previous builds this software when installed has caused problems with PD, a software conflict.
Please check out: http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/15/15082.page#86269
I believe you have K-Lite codec pack installed as this includes Haali Splitter and you'll see in the read me it is not recommended for PD editors.

That's all I can see for the moment.

Information on the source camera and sample video file you are editing along with a screenshot would be useful. see guides below.

Thanks Dafyyd, this is much appreciated. Re the camera info, it's a Canon HG10 (http://www.canon.co.uk/for_home/product_finder/camcorders/high_definition_hd/HG10/), and I shoot XP, in Program mode - nothing fancy. As for a sample file, I take it you just want me to send you any old .mts clip? And what are you looking for, please, by way of a screenshot?

In the meantime, what do I do about the Haali Media Splitter - should this be uninstalled and replaced with something else (or whatever) or would it be less hassle simply to go for a different editor, like Pinnacle? I'm not wedded to PD 9 - I settled on it because it got the best reviews for the money.

And do I need to update the drivers whichever editor I end up with?

It seems to me there's no point in re-installing PD 9, if ever, until the above issues are addressed. I'll speak to my local PC guy (who custom-built my new base unit) for his input. Otherwise, as ever, I'm in your hands (and those of anyone else who cares to chip in!).

I'm beginning to wish I'd just stuck with stills photography ........javascript:emoticon('');

Kindest regards.

Bob

Sorry, Dafyyd, meant to ask: if the Haali software isn't compatible with PD, which editor WILL it work with?

Cheers.

Of course.
The issue you have is likely to be because of the drivers being out of date. ATI had to release newer ones to correct the issue you're experiencing. I hope you read Fred's guide, if not please do so.

5 to 10 second video sample - video of any darn thing unedited and direct from the camera source and then attached to your reply post.

XP mode - means nothing to me I'm afraid. Frame size, frame rate per second and bit rate does. A sample video would give me all of that.

When you re-installed PD please provide a screenshot of the edit workspace or anywhere else

This is a PowerDirector forum and not a place to discuss or advise the compatibility of other software products.

I agree, you should consult with your local tech. Just remember the members here are likely to know a lot more about video editing and many have built their own (many) computers over the years.

Dafydd, sorry, having trouble sending you a sample clip - sending process starts then just freezes. Any advice, please?

Have now had my 64-bit issues resolved, have had the ATI drivers updated and have had K-Lite including Haali uninstalled. Have now re-loaded PD 9 and all seems to working well, so far - no freezes, no crashes.

So, assuming this state of affairs continues, my next question concerns updates.

I see there are a number of patches for PD 9 available. Can I assume that the patch showing the most RECENT date incorporates all the updates from the previous patches, or do I have to load each patch / update separately, and in date order (oldest first)?

Thanks.
