Are you talking about just looking at the video clip on the time line or a rendered project?
HDedit is right, you get better results working off a hard drive.
Depending on your computer and the preview window resolution you have selected, the higher (or better) resolution selected sometimes cause your preview to be choppy and jerky. This during preview only, normally your rendered project will be fine.
The best free video, audio, and more converter is Format Factory if you need to convert anything prior to shoving it into Power Director.
