Power Director 9 fails to get past splash screen

Hi

Having purchased PD9, I have been trying for over a week to get PD9 to open. I have installed, un-installed, re-installed updated with latest patch and the software will not open. I have updated all video drivers etc. to latest versions with no joy.

On clicking the icon on my desktop I get a splash screen with a rotating swirl opening up. This sits there and the egg timer shows that the software is trying to open. After a few seconds the splash screen disappears and nothing happens, no PD9 no screens.

Any advice?

thanks

Hello RSM. It sounds like your system either doesn't have the necessary horsepower to open PD9, which would be strange; or, some app on your computer is preventing PD9 from initializing; or, the PD9 app itself is corrupt. Did you also install the content package. PD9 comes in two or three zipped files. Install the program first, then the content pack(s). PD9 does look for the content packages when loading, and if it doesn't find them, it can sometimes just hang.

At the top of the forum you will see a pinned email with the information that the pros (not me, I am a newbie) would require to try and assist you to isolate the problem and fix it. Most important would be a dxdiag report of your system. Also helpful would be general specs and what operating system you are using.

Once you post that, I am sure the pros will be able to help. Have a great day.

Regards,
-Phil

Hi rsm -

From my limited experience of this problem (only ever happened once here), there are two possibilities:

1. http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/12913.page
2. Some other process is happening that is interfering with PD's start up... check task manager.

Cheers - Tony

Hi SoftDeko

I have followed all your tips and the folowing is the result:-

1) Unable to tell you actual PD9 version since it will not run. However it is a retail version of PD9 purchased now over a week ago. Please note that I have reverted back to this version having completed yet another re-install following your notes. It should also be noted that prior to this I had installed the very latest patch from the website but still PD9 did not get passed the splash screen.

2) I attach the file rsmdxdiag.txt for you to review.

3) As said I uninstalled and re-installed as per Part C instructions.

In addition as I become more frustrated at my purchase not even opening, I have download and installed with no issues a trial version of Pinnacle Studio Ultimate version 14. This software runs with no problems.

Any thoughts on how to proceed?

thanks

Mine did that with 2330a when I upgraded to that patch. I did a uninstall and reinstall and it still did it. I then did a re-update of all my codecs and video drivers and it started working after that. At the time I just assumed it must have been a smart sound issue.

Did you open task manager and look in the process tab and see if PD even started? It would show that it had started when I was having my issue. It would be listed as PD9.exe It would not show in the applications tab.

Hi Bubba

Yes I did check task manager, the .exe file opened in the process tab but no application opened as you say. All codecs as far as I know are up to date as are my video drivers. I have not yet tried running it without smartsound installed to see if it makes any difference. Yet another uninstall, re-install.

Before you install any patches does it open and can you activate it? Might be a patch issue. Not everyone is happy with the latest patch.

The only thing that I see (and I am by no means a savvy as most of these guys) in your system printout is that you RAM may be an issue (but not just to get it running, only in rendering) and you are running DirectX 9. My old video card was 500 meg and it worked fine for me.

rsm,
I ran PD9Ultra on an XP system during the first half of beta testing but I had a 1 gb graphics card and more ram than you have. Your system needs more ram and may struggle with the graphics some stage. It's also underpowered for PD9.

Please go to the installation PowerDirector executive file and provide the full name of the file - that should give the build version you have. Alternatively go to Program Files > CyberLink > PDr.exe and right click on it > Properties - you should have the version build displayed. Give all the information please.

Did you purchase the Deluxe or Ultra version?

I would suggest you re-install PD9.

PowerDirector 9 is a first generation 64bit program designed to run on a 64bit system and take full advantage of the capabilities on powerful editing computers. PD9 will run on 32bit systems as well but will have 32bit limitations.

Dafydd

Hi Dafydd

The program purchased is PowerDirector 9 Deluxe. The version of pdr.exe is 9.0.0.2702. As a previous post I have now installed a trail version of Pinnacle Studio HD version 14 and it runs without issue therefore I am assuming that the pc is powerful enough to run PD9.

Any more thoughts?

I will be uninstalling and re-installing again later.

thanks
