[solved] PowerDVD 10 can't play MKV files

Hello,

I'm running Windows 7 x64 on an Intel platform with PowerDVD 10 Mark II Ultra. Problem is that everytime I attempt to play a MKV file, the software displays an error message after a while : "Cyberlink PowerDVD don't authorize playback of this format" (error message is in french so translation is more or less approximative.

But I do have Version Mark II Ultra ! In the past MKV playback used to work on this PC. I tried reinstalling PDVD and it didn't work. Of course the MKV files I'm attempting to play work fine on other PC.

Any ideas ?

Thanks !

Julien

Hello,
you may provide some info about the MKV files you use?

you may use a tool call mediainfo and post the related information here?

Well it's not a matter of file types. As I mentionned : the MKV files I'm attempting to play on my main PC play fine on my other Media Center PC that is equipped too with PowerDVD 10 Ultra Mark II.

I assume that if one PC manages to do the playback of that files, the other should too ? And of course hardware wise my main PC is able to handle MKV files (Core i7, GeForce 580, etc).

There you go anyway for the mediainfo report :

Thank you so much Michael for the reply. However the updates still did not allow me to play MKV files. I downloaded the latest update. Still did not work. I then figured I'd have to download all updates. Still did not work. So I figured I'd have to install all updates in order. That still did not work. The updates I downloaded were for PowerDVD 10 Ultra build:

- 1705
- 1714
- 1830
- 2113

The symptoms I am having when attempting to play MKV files is that the player attempts to open the file, then freezes. I have to then control+alt+delete in order to close the program.

Thanks again for the help. Please recommend alternative remedies. Thank you so much.

Hi,

some suggestions:

1. install the orignaly downloaded/bought software
2. activate it
3. install the latest patch only (no need to install all patches)

If you use/have installed any Codec packs - please try without them, such packs are knonw to casue a lot of trouble (whereas they can also bring some new features - but you never know what you get )

In my case I have version 2113.51 installed, just reapplied the latest update, and guess what ? MKV playback is still broken. Can you help ? I mean for real ?

And... I don't use any codec pack.

Just a note,

I have the same issue a week later after a new install of PowerDVD 10 Mark II Ultra 3D retail.

The same mkv files that played before and with the previous trial version are now not supported.

I sent a report to customer service yesterday?

Not sure why we have to go through Customer support ? Can't you help on this board ? Isn't it the purpose of the forum ?

Yup. Still the same problem. No workaround so far.
[Post New]
I'm still waiting to see this issue fixed.

All my libraries are in MKV containers that played fine with the trial.

Hi,

sounds if your problem is isolated to your specific setup/systems/files.

do you use any third party Codec-packs on your systems?
what codecs (video and audio) are used in those MKV?

As previously stated I don't have any 3rd party codecs installed on my system by my own. As for the MKV, I posted the details previously so I guess you can have an idea, right ?

But then again it's not a matter of a special MKV compatibility issue : another PC with PDVD 10 Ultra play those files fine. But on that specific setup it fails to open them. Why ?

Thanks,

Julien
[Post New]
Just curious,

Did you install any other A/V related apps after PDVD?
[Post New]
Thanks to CS I had issues with Roxio Creator 2011 and PDVD 10 on my new HTPC

Completely wiping creator and PDVD then reinstalled PDVD and all is great.

I am even able to stream and watch a 38GB MKV with no issues.
