Audio track becomes really quiet after normalizing

Hi everyone! laughing

I've been working on a video for the last few days and last night while putting the finishing touches on it, I right-clicked on the audio track and selected "Normalize this Audio Track". Usually this has really worked well for me because I've made a few videos that have used footage with various levels of volume, and the Normalize option gives the whole video a consistent volume.

However, that did not happen with my latest video. Instead, after I selected Normalize, the audio track became really quiet, aside from spots where the original volume was left untouched. I've attached some screenshots to illustrate this.

Edit: I've uploaded the screenshots to Imgur.

Could anyone please help me figure this out?

As far as I know, PD's Normalize never worked as we'd hoped, unfortunately.
When necessary, I do it manually, select all the videos or audios, drag the audio line, up or down using the yellow peaks of the wave as a limit, general adjustment.
When needed, I adjust each video clip separately, viewing the yellow peaks and also listening.

Be sure you have all audio clips selected prior to "Normalize" function.

The "Normalize" will set all clips to the same level, not necessarily a normal audio level. However, once they all have the same level, you can then use the horizontal gain slider to adjust the whole track to a normal listening level. For background, it appears PD kind of uses the most common level of a bunch of clips to normalize to. So, if one’s timeline is dominated by very amplified clips and only a few soft clips, PD will "Normalize" to the level of the amplified clips. Not necessary what's desired. The converse is also true, so adjusting overall track gain after "Normalize" is generally required unless the majority of the timeline is at the right level.
