Hi James,
That's exactly what I tried (well one of them) - the forward play (original) worked fine, but the 1.5 seconds of reversed video would not render. I'll get the metaphorical scissors out this evening and remove the special effect, but thanks or the feedback.

I finally nailed it to a "reverse video" segment of 1.2 seconds. At least I'll sleep now. I've tried to "produce" to various formats also render it to dvd, in the hope I could then "pull it back" into my final cut - but PD8U, with all its updates/fixes is having none of it. Any suggestions welcome.
I used the piece to extend a 1.5 second shot into almost 3 seconds - so less likely to be missed - but the viewer jerks and jumps at that point when I play it back - so I was going on faith that it would come out right on the rendered dvd. I'll check the forum before I cut it - in case someone can put me on track - else I'll chop the segment and move on.

TIA

Well, writing to a folder certainly saves coasters, but for me it now halts on 24%. After the first attempt I ran a disk cleanup utility - but it still failed on 24%. No time for more attempts now but it occurred to me that the time elapsed and time remaining clocks displayed during burning would be usefully accompanied (or replaced) by "last frame processed" - don't you think?

The clocks do not stop running when the process hangs - so they are of little use unless everything is working properly, and you won't know that is true until the end. the "Last Frame" would be much more use, IMO.

Just a thought.

I tried that, upped it by 20% for a couple of "stuttering speaches" - but the sound & image went out of sync for more than just the current segment - at least UNDO works.

I may try again but I need to baseline this project first, don't want to risk anything after the hours already invested.

This reminds me..... I have 3 original tapes captured.
For the first tape I "split audio", for the others I did not.

The sound plays all the way through, even though there are now maybe 40 segments. Mostly the audio "squiggles" bar looks fine whether it is in he video track or audio, BUT the first segment of "tape2" sound is blank (i.e. squiggle-free).
Left alone it still works/sound fine, but when I applied the "+20%" speed option, it is as though the audio track jumped forward to the next segment - nightmare! The Father has the Best Mans speech, The comedy act, the Best man, and the Soloist, the gags
....... when I worked for Fujitsu, we's have called it a "special feature" - but I suspect something is awry. (but like I said UNDO worked).

Already underway, but I've aborted now & gone back to the Create Disk option - I'd not noticed that one of the options was Not to Create Disk.
I'm not into the jargon.. what's a "vob"?

My DL blanks arrived yesterday, but even I would not want to sit through a 2 hour home movie - even if it is my son's wedding (if you tell the wife, I'll deny everything!).

Already did step 1 yesterday, also 28% equated to 19min 56sec, but the segment was the longest - went from 12mins to 23 mins - I had only adjusted white balance, come to think of it, that was after I ouput the "uncut" original a few days ago.

I assume to write to a folder, I use the Produce tab and go for MPEG4 for best quality & compression - I hope it fits into 4.7 GB for next stage (got 240GB spare on my HDD), but at least I can halt coaster production for the moment.

Thanks for the advice, will give feedback either way.

ps The Standard output stopped at 28% too.... What should I look for?
I burnt a dvd of a wedding - 2 hours long a few days ago - worked first time!
I could only get it onto a single dvd using "standard quality".
Today I finished editing the 70 minute version, with transitions etc.
So far I've used 4 dvd's from the same spindle and each one failed with the orange bar at 28%.
I have 2 Lite-on dvd burners - so that's 2 coasters from each.
The only difference is that this time I opted for "smartburn", for a better quality finish (still too big for Best Quality).
Last week I installed PD8 Ultimate and after the 2nd burn failure I downloaded & applied the PD8U updates.
I've got oodles of disk space, XP, and 2Gb memory.
Not expecting instant answers/suggestions so will try the StdQ option in case there is a prob with source file - if so I expect fall-out at the 28% marker!
TIA.
