After filing a support icket, the support team sent me some instructions and a new link to re-download the program and a new Activation Code. I did it all and it worked great.
I had the exact same question. It now appears that the email I received had a "Serial Number" that matches the format for the so called "Activation Key". It makes for confusion to use two different terms for the same thing.

Now my problem is that I have a corrupted install since I halted installation without the Activation Key. Now Power DVD will not install until it is cleaned up.
