John,
I'm trying to evaluate PD7 for purchase and I have the same issue you report. I'm using a Sony TRV-480 which is a Digital8 camera capable of playing the 8 and HI8 formats. Of course I got the camera for the purpose of converting old analog tapes so mine are all HI8. When I try to capture I get 6 seconds and that's it. With MovieMaker2 the capture runs flawlessly for 2 hours and delivers a good quality DV-AVI with a file size of 26GB. I was hoping to use PD7 so I could capture directly to MPEG-2 and then compare quality. Under the Device Manager my camera is reported as Device Instance ID: AVC\SONY&DV-VCR&CAMCORDER&DV\EC7260301460008
Hardware ID: AVC\Sony&DV-VCR&CAMCORDER&DV
I'm pretty confident that our cameras are not properly recognized by PD7. I probably won't purchase PD7 if this isn't fixed.
