Still struggling with this. When burning my first test DVD I basically just popped it in and didn't look too closely at the options, but now I'm seeing that my 720x576 captures only give me a single choice which is MPEG-2 in HD. I prefer not to sacrifice resolution. I read this post and changing the audio from LPCM to Dolby Digital saves me about 400MB per disc, which is nice. Even so, only about 70 minutes of these captures will fit on a DVD...which somebody said was normal?
Quote That is a lot of bytes for the relatively low quality VHS tapes.

Thank you for the advice.
I have decided on making the files fit to DVD before making the chapters.
Regarding the quality: I've fiddled around with several settings but since I'm applying several filters (color, sharpen) and also cropping out some noise around the margins, I thought more data meant that it would look better. I'll do some more testing with the capture quality.
I've read on this forum about the moving chapter marker issue and I'm suffering not only from this, but also chapter markers do not seem to be copy/pasteable!

My scenario is this: I'm converting VHS tapes and making each tape a project with the idea of saving each tape as a movie file. I also want to burn DVDs of these movies, which means splitting each file into 3 or 4 DVDs. So I tried copying the whole timeline range that fits on a DVD and pasted it into a new project, which works great except the chapters aren't carrying over! I can only conserve the chapters of the first range of the project, by first saving it with another name and then deleting the end. If I conserve the middle or the end, the chapters just sit there in their original position and go out of sync.

Questions:

  1. Are the final movie files too large anyway to be practical (around 12-14GB) and should I split the projects into DVD size before making chapters?

  2. Why on earth aren't the chapter markers linkable to clips?

  3. Is there a way of keeping the chapters in sync that I haven't thought of?

Thanks
