Um... you might want to prepare yourself as far as not having computer issues but... it's inevitable ... sorry ! Somewhere , sometime you might have an issue with an update, either from PD or WIN or graphics drivers, ... and you'll be scratching your head and maybe even using 'choice language' to describe your situation (lol). Trying to minimize that is good and I think we all 'TRY' to do that. But.... it's bound to happen - just wanted to forewarn you on this.

Yes, very true. The whole IT world can be very frustrating for people like me who don't know enough. But then again, so are modern cars - full of safety beeps, inaccessible engines, and windows without handles.......
But the great thing is that forums like this exist and total strangers will help you fix things and share their knowledge. Much appreciated, PD Forumites!
Cheers

Thanks for that PepsiMan.
It's probably been more than twenty years that I have been saying "I quite fancy getting back into editing", and never quite getting round to it. So perhaps a few more months will not matter.
Used to play with 16mm film many years ago. And now video is everywhere waiting to be diced and spliced. So, I'll Google about for a while and either take the plunge or wait for the next i7 releases (or whatever). It's summer fishing time here now and maybe editing is a winter project.
Cheers

Well, I really hope I can set myself up with a stable, quiet and reasonably fast machine that will run PD 14 without waiting for ten years!!
Yes, I know that there's always something better just a round the corner, and if we are on the brink of something wonderful then I'll wait.
I am just looking for a simple solution. Can't edit with my current PC. I don't know about Linux and other OS, so I thought just run with something mainstream - Win 10. From reading through this forum it seems that PD14 is good software - if you get the hardware right. If not it seems you need to be pretty PC savvy to fix the glitches. Hey, I don't mind learning - and this seems to be a pretty supportive place - but I would prefer to be re-learning editing rather than fighting a machine.
Anyway, still searching....

Hi PepsiMan
Thanks for all your input on the forum.... some of us need quite a bit of help.
I am now even more confused. On the PC Perf Stats on the GTX 960 thread I see JethroXP using an i7 5820k with Win 10 and getting what looked like good results.
And on my PC in front of me here in the rainy North of New Zealand I am using Windows 10 on a Dell Inspiron with Pentium Dual Core 5400 @ 2.7GHz.
I thought that the GTX960 / i7 5820k combination was the dream combo for this software? So I'm not sure what to think now.
Any suggestions gratefully received.
Thanks

Thanks for the replies re PSU.
I've spent this morning reading about PSUs (starting from a position of knowing close to nothing) and two points crop up. One is to buy quality - and the difference in price between a reputable brand and a cheapy is not a lot, so that's easy.
But the other point is that more is not always better. When it comes to my car and boat I like to have more power than I need and run it all in a nice stress-free, lazy sort of way. Reading up on PSUs it seems that it is not the same. A larger PSU running at low load is inefficient, and that can lead to heat, and that's something to avoid. So the aim is to have enough power, with a bit of headroom - but not too much. Now, if that is correct then I need to know my requirements.
So, I've found a few PSU calculators online, tapped in my specs (as listed above), and they are calculating a PSU of about 430W.
I am not a gamer, so really just need the new PC for browsing the internet and video editing. I am guessing that when browsing and using an SSD that the power usage is going to be pretty low. If this configuration is going to handle editing at HD output, then I doubt I will need any upgrades for a while and should therefore select power for the existing set-up, rather than trying to future proof it.
So maybe I'm looking for a 500W PSU?
Or am I missing something? (Quite likely!)
Thanks

Hi all PowerDirectors,
I've been reading as much as I can find on getting the specs right to run PD14 and I think I'm getting close to deciding on my new PC specifications. I'm looking for a stable, reasonably quiet set up. I'm not a computer techy person and so this is a bit challenging..... so I'm asking if someone could cast an eye over this parts list and see if this will work ?
Here we go:-
INTEL HASWELL-E CORE I7 5820K 6 CORE 12 THREADS 3.3GHZ 15M CACHE LGA2011
ASUS X99-A INTEL X99, DDR4, ATX, LGA2011 MOTHERBOARD
ASUS STRIX-GTX960-DC2OC-4GD5 GEFORCE GTX960 4GB GDDR5 PCI-E3.0
CORSAIR CMD16GX4M4A2800C16 DOMINATOR PLATINUM 16GB (4X4GB) DDR4-2800 CL16
INTEL 535 SERIES 480GB 2.5" SATA3 6GB/S SSD OEM (SSDSC2BW480H601)
SEAGATE BARRACUDA ST3000DM001 3TB 64MB 6GB/S SATA3
And then a quiet case, a PSU, a fan(?) and Windows 10 Home 64.
How does that look?
Many thanks to those that have shared their performance tests and answered so many questions. Especially those in the GTX960 performance thread, who have given info that led to the choices above.
So, how's my homework? Do I pass?
