Thanks for the feedback folks. I think I found a solution (though not sure if this will degrade my video quality but so far I can't see that it does) - which is to convert the source file via mediaespresso to H.264 MP4 (seeting was 1920x1080 with 13Mbps bitrate). In PD, the original file is shown under properties to be AVCHD and so is the new MP4 file - only difference is the original file's extension was .m2ts and new files extension was .mp4. The new mp4 file is also about 11GB compared to 29GB. Interestingly the actual bitrate for original was 3668kbps and for new file was 1287kbps (using windows properties). The new .mp4 file was super easy to edit and no delay whatsoever! And I then converted both original .m2ts and new .mp4 to 1) mp4 best quality and 2) AVCHD h.264 and can't tell difference in qualities. This leads to the question, does PD just suck at dealing with .m2ts files in general?

I am editing a very large project and have difficulty with PD being very slow.
Movie:
I decrypted and copied a Blu-Ray movie that I purchased - AVCHD 29GB file - m2ts 1920x1080 23.976fps 3.00Mbps. 1hr, 50 min. Dolby Digital 5.1 448Kbps.
Hardware:
I have a 2600K CPU with 16GB RAM, Nvidia GTX 570 GPU, one SSD M4 Crucial 256GB and a second Velociraptor 600GB 10,000 RPM drive. I have my source on the VR drive.
Settings:
Shadow files are not enabled. Preview is normal preview resolution, realtime. Makes no difference in speed if I set it to low or non-real time. I have hardware acceleration on. Also have CUDA on. I tried other settings such as CUDA off and others - no difference in performance.
My problem is this is painfully slow - a delay of 30-40 seconds if I click on any part of the clip and finally the image refreshes and I am able then to play or do any other functions. I have no transitions or special effects. At this point I have cut the movie into 6 different blocks (this process has taken more than an hour).
I have read through this forum and feedback is despite powerful hardware, there are similar problems. I read some have had success with PD8. I can't even find this on the Cyberlink website to purchase but am thinking to switching to PD8 to see if it makes a difference. I guess I'd love CUDA support. Is PD10 any better? Thanks

I have to ditto Rocket-Scientist. Thank you so much for that reply - really sheds a lot of light on the issue - the best response I've had and a great and understandable explanation about SSDs and resource usage. Of course as with any great explanation, you've provoked a few questions (I'll limit it to two and I appreciate your caution in talking too much hardware).
1. I've heard from other forms that it is a bad idea to have a page file on SSDs as they will quickly get worn out with writes and constant rewrites (which removes old data, copies it to a new location, or something like that). Others say SSDs nowadays have a long lifespan so its okay. Any thoughts.
2. Just spacewise, I was considering either Crucial M4 256GB SATA III or Intel 320 300GB SATA II (with the former performing moderately better but having about 50GB less). I had figured win 7 = 20GB but you said 20% so maybe 40GB, program files another 20-30GB. I figure the crucial should be good enough. Do you agree? I have a 2720QM, Nvidia 580M with 2GB DDR5 RAM, and 16GB 1600 system RAM with second set of hard drives being WD Scorpio Black 7200rpm in RAID 0 (for my write render to drives).
I want to share an article - best and most complete comparison of SSDs to spinning HDs with a few surprising results in favor of HDs.
http://techreport.com/articles.x/20037/6
I've linked to page 6 - they say they put the SSDs in a 'tortured state' of being full and in spite of this they seem to outperform many spinning HDs in Page 6: File copy speed, wordbench Photoshop, Page 5: File copy test create video and Page 7: multitasking. Would you say these benchmarks are consistent with what you said about transfer rates on large files being rewritten and modified on the fly? By the way I was considering WD Scoropio 7200 as OS and read drive and an external USB 3 RAID 0 but would prefer SSD if possible since other apps could be faster.
Again thanks for the very thoughtful response.

Yes! Got a reply back from Cyberlink support - wanted to share it in case anyone had similar issues or questions. Anyone have opinions on this? Anyone try this before?
--------
Dear Sandeep,
Thank you for contacting CyberLink Technical Support.
I understand your concern related with Cyberlink PowerDirector 9 software, that you want to know if there any way to change the cache drive location on your computer.
In regard to your concern, we would like to inform you that you can change and increase the virtual memory location to D drive, so Cyberlink will start using D drive instead of C. Please follow the below instructons to accomplish this task.
1) Increase Virtual memory:
a. Right click on "MyComputer"
b. Select Properties -> Advance.
c. Click on "settings” under Performance.
d. Select "Advance".
e. Click on "change" under Virtual memory and select D.
f. Select "Custom" and enter initial value as "512" and Max value as "1024".
NOTE: If your existing settings are higher than recommended then leave them as before.
Use the below mentioned link to get back to us for your further queries:

Any input from anyone who has any knowledge of this fact as I don't want to make a $500 mistake (thinking about Intel 320 300Gb SSD)? Would be much appreciated!

Hello all. This is a follow up to my thread of laptop set up but I decided to post this question to a different thread as my question had evolved to a very different one and wanted to make sure it was under a more relevant title.
In my quest to build 'the perfect laptop' for video editing with PD9, and in my considering SSD as my primary drive (as I also want it to be a fast laptop for other applications) it seemed that some feedback was that this would not be a good idea especially if this was a small SSD because PD by default uses C: for cache files. I'm assuming cache here is different than shadow edit files which are not necessarily vital in many cases and can be disabled.
I sorted through threads and found this comment by a few users so I wanted to see if anyone else has tried to get PD to use a separate drive for these cache files (?are they invisible b/c I couldnt' find any such files while rendering)? For that matter with larger SSDs (I guess 256Gb) as the primary drive - serving as the read drive, has anyone had difficulties with PD9? Looks like from reading through other website forums that programs like Vegas and Premiere have no problems with SSDs as an OS drive and in fact can do well with even a fairly small SSD as the C: b/c media work can be delegated to other drives so I was hoping PD would be equally flexible. I'll keep my fingers crossed

Jim,
Wow. Thanks for that info - I had no idea that you couldn't change C drive for rendering. I would've been pretty unhappy if I had been stuck with a crippled SSD. Can anyone else chime in who knows about this? I'd like to get some more feedback before making a final decision on am SSD.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. My original plan was actually NOT to use the SSD for editing and keep the shadow editing files on the other HDs.
Anyone have suggestions about how much better (?minimal, moderate, a ton) each of the set ups below would be compared to my default set up?
DEFAULT SET UP
C: SSD as OS/program files (NO media work)
D: with RAID 0 with two 7200rpm HDs with ALL of media work
SET UP # 1
C: SSD as OS/program files (NO media work)
D: with single 7200rpm HD for SOME media work
E: with single 7200rpm HD for SOME media work
(Trying to split media b/t D & E)
SET UP # 2
C: SSD as OS/program files and SOME media work (shadow edit files) - in this case I would opt for a larger SSD.
D: with RAID 0 with two 7200rpm HDs for rest of media work
SET UP # 3
C: SSD as as/program files (NO media work)
D: with a single 7200rpm HD for some media work
E: with esata with RAID 0 with two 7200 HDs for some media work
(Trying to split media b/t D & E)
Also any suggestions on how much better I'll be using GTX 580m over GTX 560m or if I should go for Radeon 6990 or 6970 instead?
Thanks!

Hello all. I would appreciate input from cyberlink powerDirector veterans about the usability and efficiency of a laptop I'm about to purchase. I will be using adobe from time to time as well but do a lot of work with PD9 ultra 64. I do HD editing from my HD camcorder (and soon from an FX dSLR). I would also want to do 3D video editing in the future when there is more software support for it. I have a few options for my config which I'll list below. I was going to purchase this with 2 SSDs but I had read SSDs aren't really a good option with video editing given the heavy read/write cycles so I've managed to pull off a raid 0 array and stick with one SSD as the OS drive.
Here it is:
Clevo P170HM3DE
Mobile Display 17.3" Full HD (1920x1080) 120Hz Matte LED Backlit LCD, and NVIDIA 3D Vision Glasses Kit Bundle
CPU Intel Core i7-2720QM 2.20GHz, 1600MHz DDR3, 6MB Cache, Socket G1 Mobile Processor
System Memory 16GB (4 x 4GB) , PC3-12800, 1600MHz SODIMM (Patriot) Quad-core processors ONLY!
Video Adapter NVIDIA GTX 580M 2048MB GDDR5 DX11 Compliant Video Card
Optical Swap Out Optical drive for additional Hard Drive
Hard Drive 1 Crucial 128GB M4 Series SATA III 6.0GB/sec Solid State Drive
Hard Drive 2 500GB 7200 16MB Cache SATA Notebook Hard Drive
Hard Drive 3 500GB 7200 16MB Cache SATA Notebook Hard Drive
Network Card Onboard Gigabit (10/100/1000 Mbits/sec) LAN subsystem
Wireless Card KILLER WirelessN 1102 the best wireless gaming and HD video experience Back to School FREEBIE
Operating System Windows 7 Professional
Questions:
1. Is the NVIDIA GTX 580M overkill? Can I get away with 560M? Or how about ATI Radeon 6970 or 6990? I want to take advantage of GPU optimization.
2. HD set up - is this recommended or something else recommended? I'd use the RAID for everything including shadow edit files.
