What do you do with multiple tracks?

Thanks James and Trevor. I see now that the multiple tracks are used to add video on top of the main track. I can put items like transitions and cutaways there.

I bought this software yesterday and am trying to master it. I see I can have multiple video tracks. I don't understand what this is for. What use is there to having multiple tracks on the same time line?
