PD8 v2508 Burning Issue

Following a saga of stability issues with v2220c, I have upgraded to PD8 V2508. And have sucessfully created a couple of projects to disc. However, my most recent project has thrown up a new issue. And that is to say that is sucessfully burns through to 99%, hangs for a while, then throws up an error msg:
"unsucessful burn. insufficient media memory"

My project is only 2615mb in size. I'm using std 4.70Gb DVD+R discs

All plays back in preview, with no issues

I'm using a HP Z8000 pavilion, Pentium 4, 3.ooGHz with XP Home Edition v2002 SP3 and 2.00 GB RAM, and burning to a USB 2.0 external Sony Optiarc AD-7201A DVD/CD writer.

There appears to be ample media memory 2.6GB to 4.7GB disc, I'm assuming its referring to the DVD+R discs, although I could be completely wrong!!

Is my system under powered for the project?

MARTIN,

What exactly are you burning to a DVD: a regular HQ SD Video or AVC High Deff video? What format is your source video: SD / HD / mpeg-2/ m2t?

Despite your project being 2.6Gb what file size do you see in the bottom left corner right before you click <BURN>. It says <...?file siz?... / 4700MB>

Read not to contradict and confute, nor to believe and take for granted... but to weigh and consider.

Martin,
Do you have enough space on the Hard Drive? - also the memory looks a bit lean at only 2 GB BUT if you add more you will have to add a change to the XP Boot file (you can get at it through MSCONFIG).
I will go and find the info and post it in a moment

Don

Take a look at this link:

This change may help others who are having unexplained crashes.

Hi Andy,
Info in bottom LHC read 2615mb/4700mb

Just to correct the point I was raising:-
The exact msg reads:-

[b]Not enough storage is available to complete this operation.

My last project completed to 92%, before recieving the above msg.

Disc Preferences are set to:-
a) Standard DVD 4.7GB
b) Widescreen 16.9
c) SP- Standard Quality
d) 2 Channels
e) MPEG2

Good point, Donald!

Hard drive space looks like it may be the issue.

Martin - have you noticed this? http://www.cyberlink.com/products/powerdirector/requirements_en_GB.html

Do you have external hard drives (or extra internal ones) you can use for storage? PD needs some "head room" to operate successfully - especially with HD editing.

Cheers - Tony

Donald, thanks for the link, I will look closer at my settings. Although I am hoping to purchase a much bigger beast of a desktop P.C very soon, which I'm sure will make life alot easier. At least 2x dual core quad and around 8GB Ram

Tony, I've just done a reccy on my storage media, and all looks to be okay
Albeit I'm only using a laptop for my current projects, until I can buy another desktop.

I have a std 80GB internal memory with 58.3GB of free space. This is where the main application is installed.

My projects have been saved to an external Maxtor TB with 668GB still of free space!!

Any other suggestions....

For interest:
I had burned the same project to a RW disc using a default menu which burned quite sucessfully. That way I new all of my chapters, transitions, effects and music etc had no conflicts or issues. Then I selected a Menu to add to my project and only change the std text from My Videos to my own title, and changed item 1, item2 , item 3 etc to my own chapters headings, thats all......

Finally saved it under a different project name as a completed file. so I still have the effects project with a nice menu....

Ok, I have just burned the same project again, (knowing what the end result is), and no data has been written to disc at all.

So does that mean the issue is definately an internal storage issue?, and not a media storage issue.....!

Martin -

I wasn't saying that was the issue... I didn't know what hard disc space was free. 58GB of free space is more than adequate for the purpose of burning a DVD, so I'd say, "No."

What's in the timeline? Format/profile/source of clips? PiP structure? Particles? Effects? Is it a complex project?

Burning issues with more complex projects can usually be overcome by Producing the file first. Is it to be a standard DVD or AVCHD (to play in Blu-Ray or PS3)? That will determine the profile used for production.

Cheers - Tony

Aaaaaah - the menu! No - you said it burned OK with that menu before. What's different then?

Another thing to try is setting the burn speed slower in Burn Settings.

Hi Martin,
As has been said elswhere this application is very memory hungry and doesn't do to good a job in managing it. Many of us have had problems in this area (manifesting themselves in many ways). The problem seems to be when the application wants more memory it gets a little confused and either hangs or gives erroneus messages.
I hear on the grapevine that CL and the RD people are working on this specific area. I personally have a similar system to you BUT use Win 7 64 bit. I am currently running 2508 BUT I know one or two who are having considerable success with the previous build, with CFF used to modify the headers in the EXE and DLL files to use > 2GB memory. If you look at the EXE files in 2508 you will find that this mod has been applied to this build BUT I don't know what effect that would have on a 32bit system with limited memory. Your system sounds fairly powerful and the SCSI discs should be an advantage I would of thought, but for such a well specced system what happened to the memory?

Good Luck, but remember these are only opinions from afar

Whoops - sorry martin I am answering the wrong problem in the wrong thread - please forgive me - its an age thing!!!

How many chapters are in your project? I've been having problems with burns over about 130 chapters, but I do not get an error messge, it actually says burn sucessful most of the time, but it's sometimes it's missing files or none generated at all.

I seems to be releated to the motion menus, which we still have no way to disable like past versions. I been sucessful by removeing some of the chapters I don't really need and get it down to about 125 or less chapters, this seems to releive the program from generating so many motion menus (which it seems to do from 1-20% complete) and probably helps it from reaching I think the 1GB max menu data for a DvD menu (a DvD standard, nothing to do with the program), but there may be something wrong on the program side with this. I've have an open trouble ticket with Cyberlink for a few months, no resolution. I think the quick fix for them whould be to add the diable option back in the setting for the motion menus, or even better a second option to only generate motion menus for the main titles and not for the chapters, this would give you a nice look, but not the problems associated with with multiple chapters.

I burn to a folder & transfer to a disc after I get a good burn, to save some discs.

Reading everybodys input I have tried to take on board all thats being said. I have been running through the various tasks suggested by Dafydd Bevan - SoftDeko from the following link:

http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/7958.page

Only recently following my upgrade from v2220c to v2508 build, I did completely rebuild my system from a formated 'C' drive to a fresh OS install. Initially I was able to burn two DVD,s of the same project, but didn't like the main menu, so decided to change it, at the same time correcting a few chapter spelling mistakes.
And since then my systems really seems to be sluggish with PD8 even though cpu is running very low....

Sorry Donald you asked how many chapters etc:
I have 26 Chapters, with blizzard transition between every chapter, 6 effects repeated through the 26 Chptrs, 30 sec music intro and 60 sec music outro, that's it. Total size 2615mb
