I do not believe they are compatible.
I get the same message with my HV30 and had to go to an OEM version of a competitor to make it work. Frame drops, but it worked.
Is it SD or HD? If it's SD on an HD tape, that might be an issue.

i don't know about this, but i want to jump in here because I'm curious.

According to the Canon site the Vixia HV40 records in MPEG2.

PD looks to support MPEG2 in both capturing and importing.

What am I missing here? I would hate to buy a future camcorder that I thought would work but doesn't.

Am I missing something in the specs that would cause an incompatibility?

Just wanting to learn.

It just won't work, for me anyway.
It's not the format, there is some type of communication problem between the HV series, firewire, and PD.
It might be related to taping in SD on HD tape.

Have you tried a different mode? I think Cinema Mode is 24fps, which I wouldn't think would even matter in PD's Capture, but that's all I can think of at the moment. I hope you get it figured out because that's exactly the camera I am hoping to have in a few months. __________________________________

No, that's actually why I didn't think the format should matter, but as I understand it the tape models are the only ones that support true 24fps. The Flash models are simulated at 60i, I'm told.

I prefer MPEG2, but I wish camcorders would give us the option. The convenience of MPEG4 sometimes, or even high quality DV when needed. Oh, well. Didn't they just recently add support for Canon? Maybe there is still a bug in the system. I'll just have to wait until I have one to be much help here. __________________________________

I shot some HD video today,
but PD will not capture this camera as anything but SD Mpeg2. I am not blaming PD! I just can't seem to get this right.
In addition, I have had to go the Device Manager 3 times, uninstall all the HID's, reboot, because the connection keeps disappearing.
A wise old sheep herder once told me, "tape is dead", then he made some sort a noise, sounded like "ynysybwl", then fell over atop his favorite ewe.
But I digress,
consider choosing another recording medium.

I managed to edit the mpeg 2 capture template, at the same time as the connection was working. I'd tell you how if I knew how I did it.
However, I must be suspicious of the files I created.

I've just been trying to clarify a pile of disc formatting information for myself (partly in response to a PM)... When I started digging into it to make my response clear and accurate, it showed me what an absolute nightmare all this format-war stuff has left us with.

Definitely, the format wars is why I avoid MPEG4 as much as possible until the final encoding. Seems that every camera has a different version of MPEG4 and none of them work together. __________________________________

Ok, here is the latest...
The camera is fully working. I can shoot HD, and after reinstalling the HID's thru the Device Manager, PD can see my HV30 as HDV device.
Now, it pretends to capture by giving me an empty file, AVCHD no less!
I am shooting MPEG HD, so I am at a loss.
Additionally, HDV Split does not function in Windows 7.
HDV Split works on my wife's XP computer, and that is how I determined that my camera's i-link is apparently working.

Updates as they occur. Now looking for HDV capture freeware for W7!
