Decrease Amplitude of Selection

I recorded a speech which has very loud applause in places. All I want to do is to select the applause part and decrease the volume of that selection. It seems like a very simple thing to do but I don't see any way to accomplish this. Any advice?

There are several ways to do that, but I think the two quickest and easiest ways would be to use the Clipping Removal tool from the Restore room or the Dynamic Range Control effect in the Edit room to force all sections louder than a specific threshold to be quieter.

Experimenting with the settings in each should let you find the best settings for your particular clip.
