Are subtitles embedded into the video? If so, how does that work when uploaded to youtube? If I or my viewers add additional language subtitles, can the ones from PD be turned off on youtube so that viewers can see their language version?

Subtitles can be set up as optional when you're outputting a DVD or BluRay disc.

I don't know that they can be set to turn off and on when you output your video for YouTube.

Best is to submit the video to Youtube WITHOUT the subtitles. And to separatly upload the .SRT file (which can be exported from PD). You can have multiple subtitles files per video. It is also possible to write subtitles using YouTube Studio.
Suggest that you look around a bit in what is possible in Youtube (and be amazed :)

I concur with Warry. Create the subtitles in PD and then export the SRT file. Remove the subtitles from the video and then upload the SRT file to YouTube.

I actually use a service called REV.com to create the SRT file and then I upload it to YouTube. REV.com costs about $1 per minute of video. MIght be kind of pricey for some but it saves me a lot of time so it is worth it to me. Subscribe to PowerDirector University on YouTube.

Thanks everyone. What I've been doing is uploading to youtube and then manually adding in the subtitles. I was just concerned that adding the subtitles in PD and producing the video with the subtitles would affect using other language subtitles on youtube. If I can add them, export, and delete, that would help tremendously.

If it's easier to use the Subtitle Room in PD, you can certainly export the subtitles so there won't be any attached to your produced videos. I think you'd want to use these two settings:
