Is there some way to zoom the timeline to the current selection?

Use the "+" key, click on the "+" at the lower left corner of the app window, or drag the nearby horizontal slider

You can also type in the time code in the preview player.

Not to the current selection, but Ctrl mouse wheel will expand and contract timeline and is usually one of the more convenient methods.
