When I enable proxy creating (of my UHD media files) with a shadow file resolution of 1920x1080 in PD. PD also creates shadow files when I'm using HDV (1440x1080) or HD (1920x1080) media files. This makes no sense to me. Is there a way to tell PD only to create shadow files when source media has a resolution larger than HD? It seems like PD determines which clips are "high res" or not by looking at the number of lines, which in both of your examples is 1080.

You can manually turn off shadow files from the General preferences menu when working with 1440x1080 clips, and re-enable it when working on Full HD clips or above. If you're working on a project with both types of clips, you'll have to decide whether you want to use shadow files for all or none.

Note that if you have a reasonably new computer (say within the past 5 years), you shouldn't need shadow files at all for Full HD clips. You'd really only need it for 4K or higher clips.

OK thanks optodata for the quick response. I indeed only need proxies for my 2k7 and 4k media files when adding fx etc. PD doesn't automatically detects when proxies are needed or not, means I have to set, depending on the media in my project, manually on or off the shadow files creation. There is no control over input source, just output. But yes, it is very dumb logic that was implemented. For instance, if one imports 1920x1080 low bitrate, say 6000Mbps and you have 1920x1080 shadow files. PD will create a 1920x1080 8Mbps proxy file, why? Basically, it just looks at frame size, at PD15 they modified shadowfile creation to be anything above 720 vertical.

If you have high bitrate source regardless of frame size editing can be smoother with the lower bitrate proxy file. Better controls would be nice, PD does not have them. Would have been nice to have a little more complete package when they added output frame size at PD16. Even then inconsitent with size, https://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/49583.page#post_box_261285
