mp4 file size vs DVD files?

I tried to make a DVD from a mp4 video file that was 1 gig. Create Disk said that the finished DVD would be 10 gigs, too big for my 4.7 gig DVD. Is this normal? Or am I doing something wrong?

That is normal as it is the time length of the file that matters. If your mp4 is say 2.5 hours in length and you want to encode it to the old mpeg-2 file for the dvd then you need take into account the bitrate encoding of the mp4 file which is more efficient than the older ancient mpeg-2 file required for dvd that you want to convert to.
