Is it possible to change a transition from horizontal to vertical? Flipping and inverting don't work. The attachments show what I mean.

It depends on which transition you want to edit. Some of them are alpha transitions that can be modified in the Transition Designer.

I can't tell from your screenshot which transition that is. You can check by selecting the transition once it's added to the timline, and then clicking the Modify button that becomes available.
