Quality loss or not?

Hi all, here I am again with another qeustion.
I have captured a 90 minute videotape spanning several days of filming and want to edit that in PD17. To start with I'm thinking of splitting is in smaller sections that each cover a day and render those into separate mp4's.
But what happens when I import those new mp4's in a new project and render this project again as a whole? Do I lose quality because of the second processing?

Unless you are using lossless codecs or Cyberlink SVRT,every render loses quality from compression and recompression. Lossy codecs include...all of them. Mpeg and AVC both start out lossy and get worse with each render.

You may just want to use the new pre-cut feature. That might hep you keep things manageable, and you won't ever have to "re-produce" any clips.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I want to use some of the clips in another program, so I guess the pre-cut feature is no option then. But for those parts that don't need to be used outside PD17 it is a good tip so I will definitely use this option!

The best option to use clips in another program would be to produce using SVRT, if it's available for your clips. SVRT basically copies the frames from the source clip to the new one, with no changes.

If an SVRT profile isn't available for the format your source clips are in, you can use VirtualDub or other 3rd party tools to simply cut the source into clips of any length. Search the web for more options.
