I'm not sure what you mean by distorted? and what sort of files are you using.
I'm not 100% sure but others will correct me - If you have checked the box (by default I think) PD generates shadow edit files for (I think) any file over SD resolution - I haven't experiemented to find exactly what that resolution is or if it applies to all file types - it certainly does to .MP4s
The files in the media library are the originals but those in the time line are shadows which are a lower resolution and are less intensive to edit and manipulate.
Once the project is completed, the timeline is used as the "template" to produce the final video from the original files.
So there may well be a difference in how PD displays the 2 types of file depending on what codecs you have installed. For instance the same file played on my faster media dual core in wmp does not display the same on my single core older system in the same version of wmp.
Maybe its worth checking you have the same codecs installed?
