Producing Video from multiple devices
[Post New]
Hi

I am brand new to video editing.I have Power Director 16 ultimate. I am making videos to upload to You Tube from a trip to Alaska. First mistake I made was setting all devices to 4:3 aspet ratio. I am ok with the "blackbars" on the sides of my videos. Id rather have that than distorted images. I am worried about what setting to produce my video in. I am using bout stills and video from four different devices. they are:

Kyocera E6810 4:3 aspect

Stills 4160x3120
video 1280x960 30fps

Sony Cybershot 4:3 aspect

Stills 3648x2736
Video 1920x1080 30fps

I Phone 6 4:3 aspect

Stills 4032x3024
Video 1440x1080 30fps

GoPro Hero 4 16:9 aspect

Video 1920x1080 60fps

I have a few videos ready to produce. They are under 15 minutes long. The youtube Power Diretor University told me to use H.264 . The options are

640x480 24p 6MBPS
640x480 30p 6MBPS
2K 2048x1536 30p 40MBPS
4K 4096x3072 30p 50 MBPS

Which setting shoud I use to produce my Videos?? HELP!

Hi WanderingPinto -

That's a bit of a complex task you've set yourself, but it'll be OK.

You have a mixture of aspect ratios & frame rates... not to mention resolution.

Resolution/Frame Rate: I'd produce to 1920x1080 @ 30fps, but probably use the 1280x960 video from the Kyocera E6810 as PiP, like this:

The background can be images/slideshow or video.

Aspect Ratio: If you wish, you can either crop your 4:3 photos/videos to 16:9 or use the "Set Aspect Ratio" feature to change them to 16:9 (use the CLPV method if you do).

That's a start anyway.

Can I use the "Set Aspect Ratio" on a current editing project set to 4:3 ? Or do I have to throw away weeks of editing work ? What is CLPV Method ? I know when I first started to edit I had project set to 16:9. It came up with a warning message not to mix 4:3 with 16:9 . So I went to 4:3 setting and it worked fine. I am concerend I will lose content and quality if I crop my 4:3 to 16:9.
If I chose to produce in 4:3 what is the best option of the 4 quality options shown?

thank you

If Maliek told you that those are your options then choose 4K 4096x3072 30p 50 MBPS. Your slideshow or stills will be at maximum quality.

Hi Dave -

Sorry - I wasn't aware that you has already set up the projects in 4:3 & it failed to sink in when you said you had the projects "ready to produce".

The whys & wherefores of cropping images or modifying aspect ratio is a bit complex & a personal choice. Cropping loses content, but not quality (if you do a 100% crop) e.g. a 4:3 5275x3957 (~20MP) cropped to 16:9 will be 5275x2968 (~16MP). Yes, you lose content (top & bottom) but not image quality.

If you right click on an image in the timeline & select "Set Clip Attributes" > "Set Image Stretch Mode" you can use stretch or CLPV. Using CLPV stretches the edges more & the central section less. In my own projects, I never use it, preferring to crop. Screen shot attached.

The reason I suggested 1920x1080 was that it matched much of the video content you have. Also because it didn't register with me that you already has 4:3 projects set up.

Using 4:3, the default production options are limited but if you click the + button you can make a custom profile (i.e. there are more options).

Producing to a 4K profile would be fine for your stills, but your video content would be compromised (stretching pixels). That's why I suggested Full HD resolution.

Cheers - Tony

No problem, as I said I am new and learning. I produced my video in 4:3 using the higest resolution 4K and it would not play outside of Power Director. I cat it to the TV and it looked ok.

Then I set edit to 16:9 and cropped my 4:3 videos and pitcures to fit manually by sliding the diaginal bars. I produced that video in 1920x1080 30p. Even though I lost content , it looked better having the entire TV screen filled. Plus it plays on my computer without Power Director.

I know the more I work with it the better ill get. Ill let you know when they are uploaded to You Tube!

thanks
Dave
