PD 14 - can't edit due to Choppy Preview

Hi Gurus!

I am using PD14 (14.0.4207.0) on a new-ish gaming laptop. DELL Inspiron 15.

I have attached a DxDiag file, as recommended in the "readme" for this forum.

I am making a video of a song, with the lyrics on the screen. The preview feature is so choppy it is prohibiting me from being able to insert my text in the accurate locations. It skips and jumps.

I am a novice, although have made a number of short videos in the past, always scratching and clawing my way through the process.

I used to use Ulead VideoStudio. I had hoped that PowerDirector would bring me a more stable environment, but alas... although some aspects are better, some, like this... are a major headache.

BUT... maybe I am doing something wrong. So here are my questions for your consideration:

1.) I am using Titles to input the text. Is there another feature, or way, which would create less drain on the system? Everything starts going bad, the minute I start adding Titles.
2.) The primary problem I'm having is that the song/sound cuts out and then drops me in a position a bit farther down the timeline. Only seconds, or milliseconds, but enough the skew my whole effort.
3.) Is it my hardware, or settings?

I've been reading Forum posts for ages... and have not found the right solution for my problem. It does seem that a LOT of folks are suffering my same pains.

Thank you VERY much for help you will give me.

... Connie

welcome to the forum.
yes, you do have fast computer.

1) your best bet is to disable all HA(hardware acceleration) and set the preview to HD or lower.

microsoft program called mousewithoutborders are giving you some problems...

2) your C:\ drive is too small. you can render the .pds project from the usb 3.0 external hdd but it'll be slow compared to running straight from the C:\ drive. PD needs at least 60-100GB virtual memory hdd spaces, too.

since you have the WD, here's a link to free program called Acronis True Image WD Edition Software . get a bigger Samsung 850 EVO 500GB SSD and use the free programs to clone the current C:\ 128GB ssd. you can keep the projects to external hdd until you want to finish the projects then copy to C:\ for faster rendering.

try no.1 first...

Hi

Further to what Pepsiman has suggested.

You don't say what resolution your clips are. This sounds like a struggling pc trying to deal with high resolution media. Have you tried using shadow files? These are a lower resolution version of your originals that assist the machine to deal more easilly with the overload. Secondly, as a test, you can work in Non-real time. There will be no audio, but it will tell you if your pc is struggling.

Shadow files can be enabled in EDIT PREFERENCE GENERAL. NRT can be selected under preview setting beneath the preview screen. You can also select a lower quality preview. All these things will help.

If you use shadow files to edit with you will see a yellow flag on each clip in the Media Library. These flags will turn green when they are ready for editing. Make sure ALL the clips are green before you start to edit. The lower res clips will revert automatically to your originals on production.

Are you using ordinary titles "T" Title Room or are you attempting to use subtitles. Titles are usually very is to place on the timeline track and normally cause no problems like you describe.

If none of this helps, come back and we can delve deeper.
