This camera is not being recognized. I have numerous HI 8 tapes to convert to DVD but, for now, PD15 is not playing nice. I have PD15.0.2509.0 Ultra SR VDE161209-02 Downloaded yesterday 2-4-17. I also have PD 13 with same issues prior to downloading 15. I also went into Movie Maker with the saame results.

Do I need to change some settings? Could it be possible that these 2 versions don't play nice with this camera?

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated

Brent

PS - I know enough to know that I know nothing

There are also 2 output ports from the camera - firewire to USB (used to try connection) and DV to USB (do not have but have one ordered)

Your Dxdiag.txt file does report any Firewire connection/card.

You need to connect that camera via a Firewire connection. You need a Firewire card for your computer and a cable to connect the camera.

I looked at the model camera and although it is Digital 8 it appears that a USB connection is available as well as firewire, and memory stick for video transfer. TRV350 page ------------owner's manual
Some more research is needed.

Thanks Barry. If there is any research I can do, please let me know. Even though the Super Bowl is coming up, I will ladly break away if needed.

Superbowl? Is that tonight??? I'm joking of course, we live in the Pat's hood, see them at church, shopping, I'm actually watching the Art Director's cat! Can't wait to see what she brings me from the field, maybe a nice team hat that you can't buy in a store! Or an extra ring...

EDIT: Pats not sharp at all, not looking good. We better get back to the topic, have you ever tranferred video from this camera?

I.m not counting the Pats out yet. They still have good offense & defense.

Good question though. No I have not to this laptop. But I did many, many to a Dell desktop several years ago using both Pinnacle 1st then switched to Power Director vers 8 I think, then to 11 & 12 Ultimate. I don't recall which cable connection I used. I have ordered a USB to DV cable. I only have the firewire cable. Maybe the dv cable will work?

Also, I have transferred video from a memory card to my HP Envy laptop using Power director.

I have a Sony TRV740 Digital 8. The USB port is for connecting as 'web cam' only. You can not transfer the Digital tape via USB. Transfer is by firewire only.

I have WIn 8.1 pro adn PD 15. No issue transferring Digital 8 from it with firewire.

Thanks GGR but I am not familiar with iLink. How do I use that? Is that hardware? I have an HP Envy laptop maybe 1 1/2 years old. I have loaded videos to this laptop with a memory card which is what my current camera uses.

iLink is Sony's name for Firewire. If you look under that tab on the left side, it's labelled iLink. If you're laptop is that new, it probably doesn't have firewire. PC makers moved away from firewire in favor of the USB 3 devices. When i built my own desktop 4 years ago, I had to add a firewire card to it because the motherboard didn't have one.

Just tried the USB. The Sony USB driver won't even install in Win 8.1. I haven't turned this camcorder on in many years. LOL Still works though, but doubt the battery would charge or last long if it did. LOL

In the event that neither digital transfer methods work, a stop-gap method is via the analogue output through a capture device(as if you were taking content from a VHS deck). Not ideal but a good temporary measure until you work out how to get your preferred method working.

Thanks again GGR - The 2nd port on my camera has a fat i next to it. So that must be the cable I don't have but have oredered it. Sounds like that might be the solution. I hope. Otherwise I think I might be looking at going to a Costco which charges $20 for copying a 2h tape. Better than nothing. Much Much appreciaye the input.

You need a ilink into the computer somehow, I believe. HP Envy Phoenix/4thGen i7-4770(4@3.4GHz~turbo>3.9)

Brent - the cable wouldn't help if you don't have firewire port on your laptop. Your only choices would be Neil's - analog capture from the composite/audio output or As you stated - Costco.

If you take the tape to Costco, see if they will burn the AVI files to a data disc - NOT burn to video DVD. That way to have the raw AVI files directly from the camcorder.

I think there are i-link to "other" connections, such as external devices with i-link in and USB or HDMI out, but I have not ever tried them. If you get set up at some point, I am under the impression that your camera can be used as a PASS THRU device, meaning it can be used to digitize media from analog devices such as VCR or older non digital 8 cameras. Thanks Neil I will admit to knowing enough that I don't know anything. I can edit videos but when a situation arises like this I am an idiot but willing to learn. Can you provide more info on how to do the analog output? I do have a vhs to dvd player if that would help? Would I need RCA jacks? There is an A/V jack on the camera which believe was used to connect to my tv via rca Jacks. Is it possible to connect my camera this way to the recorder / dvd player and copy the hi 8 tape to a dvd?

Thanks bunches

GGR - It might be too late to have them do that as I took my tape to them a week ago. I'll check with them tomorrow. FYI - I do have an HDMI port on my laptop. Could that help? My camera also has a 3rd port (labled audio/video) which is round. Is that the composite port you are talking about? It's been years since I did anything with this camera so much is from vague memories. But i seem to remember this had 3 RCA connections which was used to hook up to the tv. Am I on the right trsck?

Thanks for you patience

Can use Composite IN to the camcorder can go OUT the firewire to computer. There is no HDMI on the camcorder and USB was only 640x480 plus it won't work with Win 8 or 10 at all. There is an SVideo connection but I've never used it. Not sure if it is IN or OUT or both. Composite to firewire works really well though.

Brent - yes, there is a composite/audio dongle and can be used for video/audio in or out. Not sure if your model has the larger SVideo port which on the end on my TRV740.

Hi Brent,

Sony had a habit of doing things their way.

So I-link was their implementation of firewire. I recall that the composite jack was also a non-standard but that will need checking.

The s-video was standard I think.

I use a cheap and cheerful usb dongle from ebay, cost half nothing, has composite and s-video inputs and works fine for me from both camcorder and vhs players (via composite or with scart adapter) capturing direct to PD15.

I know some folk have had trouble with them but I've had a couple and they worked fine - even with old rubbish vhs tapes and with commercially done film to vhs transfer tapes.

If all else fails it's worth a look at.

Cheers
