.mt2s vs. .mp4

Hello,

I am new to the forum and am looking for your expertise here. I have been recording video since vhs to 8mm tapes to now HD files. I now use a combination of GoPro to a Canon a6000 to my Moto X Pure. But that is irrelevant. The problem I have is that when I produce my videos, it seems that the same file, when produced as a stand alone .mt2s file (I have no desire to put the files onto a DVD/Blu Ray), appears to be clearer than an .mp4 file. Below is the same file produced in both formats (while the file is long, only the first ~5:45 has been edited, the rest is unedited raw footage):

.mp4 file: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vaSO2FJJ_Y4

.mt2s file: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZQtZfEXWbc

Generally I notice that the old, .vob files (I took DVDs that were originally shot to VHS and 8mm cassettes and copied off the .VOB files).

I am using an i5, 8 GB Ram, 1T hard drive, PD version PowerDirector Ultimate 15.0.2026.0

Thanks,

Bob

Hi Bob,

I'm struggling to see the difference at 720p on Youtube.
I have noticed a quality problem on some H.264 MP4 files.
Can you send MediaInfo on both please?
Al

Thanks for your opinion, Al. I am a security nut, though, having worked in InfoSec for over 20 years. I have a dedicated PC that I use for editing and I only have the CyberLink suite on it and that is it. I don't download free programs, or really any programs, onto that machine. I've seen too many "free" programs go awry in my day-to-day work and ultimately mess up a machine. I will just have to live with what I perceive as a degraded quality.

Thanks for your help and good evening,

Bob

Sorry Bob - It's a common utility used on the form to display file codec, bitrate and other info. Can you supply that info to compare the MP4 vs M2TS files.

The is no Canon a6000. Sony has a6000.

You are not going to see any difference in the two YT videos as YT converts interlaced to progressive video anyway.

Avchd or m2ts video can be interlaced or progressive and have multichannel audio like 5.1 while mp4 is only progressive and have only stereo sound.

Hi Bob -

As Al & tomasc have said, it's a bit difficult to see any difference in the two files on YouTube. You're the only one with the original produced files.

You've produced/uploaded in 1080p, but some of your source material is only DVD quality. Straight away that is going to generate PQ issues. You'd understand that already, I'm sure.

To make it a more pure comparison it would be better to produce a small project using only HD source material, along with your motion graphics & transitions.

Some nice editing, by the way!

Cheers - Tony

You are right, I know it is a Sony. I stand corrected!

Thanks Tony. If it looks like half-ass quality, then I'll still have to go out and get her an anniversary present!

I will have to agree that Mediainfo is a small program, which you can install and not have to worry about Malware, Viruses, etc, and it allows you to view very detailed information about the files that you won't be able to find instantly. Once it's installed, right clicking on the file itself and then selecting Mediainfo is all that us required.

Now, I'm sure there are many sites out there where you can download and install the file, which are sketchy, but if you're willing to go here, https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mediainfo, you'll learn more about Mediainfo, what it can do, how helpful it can be, and if you decide to take a chance to install it, Wikipedia has a direct link to their website along with a list of other 3rd party sites where you can get it.

It's a shame we now live in a world where everyone must be proactive to prevent downloading some kind of awareness, trojans, viruses, etc, just to be able to access a utility that is very helpful when it comes to looking at the details of any type of media file. I'm sure the creators of this software never had these intentions, but leave it to the "bad" people who capitalize on popular, helpful, harmless software just because of the popularity of the software itself.

hansonb4,

If your wife is like mine, she sees the content, not the quality. I'll point out the difference between SD and HD on the evening news and she says she doesn't really notice the difference. I'm sure she could be trained to notice, but it's not something that really interests her, as much as does the content. Regards,
Dan
