Trying in vain to add text to a PD11 project

I have hesitated a long time to utter my concern here, because I feel I do not belong here: My only interest in video is to use it as an occasional tool, and even then my aspiration with regard to appearance is limited. When however, I can't even live up to my own low standards, then all desperate things can happen. I assume this is what triggered my decision to finally come out of the closet and seek help in the public domain.

To give you an idea what I do, see

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8f-qMH1vxRhD3k3Wh494QA

My present problem can be seen in the attachment. What I am unable to do is add a text of 5 seconds each to the 2 stills and the clip (60 seconds in total, divided by 5-second texts = 12 texts): PD11 always comes up with an (as it seems) absurd error message, or timeframe changes it performs against my will.

Why is it so friggin difficult to add some simple text in this programme? This goes beyond me. I tested with an online editor, and there were no such problems. I haven't even asked for scrolling text, just plain text across the window. Do I have the wrong editor? Or should I ask an editing agency to do it on my behalf?! (Well that's probably out of the question, because of the price tag.)

Has it something to do with how I proceed? Or are there any general settings I would have to take care of first? Any targetted no-nonsense advic would be greatly appreciated. And the more complete and fool-proof, the better.

Why did you not start the project with bmw1.jpg at the left edge of the timeline like you did with the title. If you did then the title would overlay on top of bmw1.jpg like you want.

See this tutorial starting 1 min. 50 sec. into the video on creating your own title : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2lz39IJbuK8 . You would probably understand better if you used the German (Deutsch) forum on Cyberlink.

Thanks for taking the time.

First, I don't see why I shouldn't be able to start with a title, like white letters on black ground? This is quite normal, have seen it in other videos many times. It should definitely not prevent me from adding text to the following 2 stills and the clip, as appears to be the case now.

The video mentioned by you is known to me. I must confess that I have some problems to follow this kid. And it has little to do with the language - probably more an age-related thing. My experience in german-language forums has in general not been so good, so I prefer to stick to english-speaking such.

Again, the question is (as far as I can see), would I use the subtitle function to create the texts wanted by me? Why then does the software keep on telling me that a subtitle must at least be 0.2 seconds long, or changes my time settings? My time settings were something near 5 seconds.

I have already tried to get this solved through Cyberlink's ticket system, but the guy (in India?) who happened to get assigned to the case didn't understand a thing. Then I sent it via fax to their customer support in Taipei, but haven't received a reply so far.

I find the whole thing kind of scandalous. I do not want to do anything special, just an ordinary thing, and I must be able to expect that it can be done. Why doesn't someone from Cyberlink get involved and offer a helping hand? That it isn't the recent model shouldn't keep them from doing what should be done.

Hi Don

To clarify the above. As text is no more than an overlay it must be placed directly beneath the place you want it to show.

For instance, if you want the text to show on a particular jpeg place it under that jpeg on another track preferably, the text track. Also if you want the text to appear part way through your jpeg presentation start the text box at the point you want to see it. The same can be said for finishing the text.

If this doesn't sort it, come back. Panny TM10, GH2, GH4,

Hi Don

I've just seen your second post.

If you want text before the jpeg put a black colour board (white text) between the first jpeg and the start of your video.

You should be able to find colour boards in the media content menu in the media room Panny TM10, GH2, GH4,

Thanks a lot for caring! My impression is growing that we all are talking, more or less, past each other, because there are so many possibilities to missunderstand each other, and because I am certain that what I want is possible and should not be problematic to achieve.

I order to first solve this comprehension problem, I am right now in the process of uploading to YT a non-listed 'copy of this same video project', however made online at Kizoa. Apart from the final 15 seconds (video clip section), this video was unproblematic to make and should show what I want.

I'll give you the URL once it's visible. Please stay tuned, hope we can sort it out then!

Ok, I'll be away from the computer for the next 10 to 12 hours. The upload should finish in about 90 minutes if nothing adverse happens, the URL being

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pR4uev0z_Bg

So the valid part is from second 0 to 50, the rest went wrong.

Maybe the road to success is to make the first 50 seconds with Kizoa and the remaining 15 with PowerDirector? .)

That video is set to Private. No one else can see it. The Shadowman has you covered on using a black color board in the space on track 1.

Well, why don't you just give it a try, instead of spreading rumours. I am well aware of the various YT categories and have chosen correspondingly.

The screen ratio of your YT clip looks like it's set 4.3, but your PD is set to 16.9

The problem area of your YT clip needs to be changed to 16.9 to match the PD setting. If you use a 16.9 setting the black edges of your YT clip will disappear.

Thanks Longedge, yours is the first reasonable response I've received here.

I understand your concerns, but my feeling at this stage is that solving many problems with one move is too much asked, given my limited understading.

I would be happy if I just managed to put my developping text snippets every 5 seconds on the images or clip below, as could be done through Kizoa, see

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pR4uev0z_Bg (second 0 to 50 only)

But it just can't be done, at least not through the subtitling function known to me - there's alway an absurd error message ('minimum length 0.2 seconds').

Did you use the subtitling function, or which other? Is there a video tutorial made by an adult that shows how to proceed?

May I suggest that 'tomasc' and 'Shadowman' now find another thread to prove their presence. Both have only produced nonsense so far, and one might even go so far as saying that it was intentional, ie to create additional confusion. That just can't be the meaning of it.

Thank you, I finally made it:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KyhernKP77E

It's not quite how I wanted it, but I can live with it.

The main conclusion to draw from this experience was: Don't do it with the subtitle function, use the text function.

You say my help was "nonsense " I'm glad I was unable to assist you as what you have produced is absolute rubbish. And believe me, that's not sour grapes, it really is utter rubbish.

Blame Cyberlink forum for the "Senior Contributor" the forum gives that ranking after a number of posts on the forum.

Hi don.mitchel,
I've read all through this thread and I have sent you a PM. Tomasc and Shadowman help and assist many forum members with sound advice and information. Your comments targeting them are totally unnecessary and reflect badly upon you.
Dafydd
