Which type of format do I need to have my videos in before I can drag and drop them into the timeline in PowerDirector 14 Deluxe?

I have just copied my DVDs that contain my home movies onto my computer, and they have transferred over as .VOB, .IFO, and .BUP files. From what I have read, the .VOB is the file that contains all the necessary information.

Do I have to convert these .VOB files to MPEG-4 with another application before using them with PowerDirecor 14 Deluxe, and if so, what can/should I use to do this?

Thank you so much for any help you can provide!

No you don't. Just import use those vob files on the timeline.

Also, I am a tech writer and have used camtasia. Is PowerDirector going to be much of a hassle to use. Im getting worried after seeing all of these posts in this forum.

P.S. I am planning on buying PowerDirector 14 "Deluxe." I don't think I need the more expensive versions.

I suggest you spend a few extra dollars to get Ultra or Ultimate. I started with Deluxe but returned it (within 30 days) and got PD12 Ultra, then later got PD14 Ultimate when it came out.

Personally, I find PD to be quite intuitive, as opposed to Adobe products which I find very difficult to use. You can get as complex as you desire in PD, but if you start by keeping things simple, you can get fancier as you get more familiar with it.

I've never tried Camtasia. Regards,
Dan

You should know that Cyberlink usually updates their software (to PD15 this year) in September or October. Of course there's no guarantee it'll happen again this year, but it usually does.

The importance of this to the new user is that there are usually some really good deals on the existing version during the summer (i.e., right now). These usually consist of a lower than list price on the software, plus some free add-ons of one sort or another. Check the Cyperlink website, as well as Amazon, B&H, etc.

When you get the software, if you get the download version, be sure to copy the downloaded files (there are usually 5-10) to a hard drive or thumb drive, along with the product keys. They can be reloaded if your computer messes up, but they are only available online for a limited time after purchase (30 days I believe), so you need to have your own copy. Regards,
Dan

Thank you for passing that along to me including the tip about copying the downloaded files before they are no longer available! This is all great information and I really appreciate you sharing it with me.

Camtasia Studio 8...........I left Camtasia in February mainly because they were not up to speed with 4K video's. It did not exist.

Camtasia project of 1080 video took 1 to 2/12 hours to complete the processing. PD14 at 4K takes 8:08mins for a 7:20min 4K video! I dont know what to do with all my free time!!!

All I can say, is PD14 is crazy fast at high resolutions.

About the posts........Features of PD14 = more posts, a good thing. I am still learning.
