Hi,

I have decided to get a new PC, and because I am now running PDR14 I have decided to go top-end. The one I am looking at at the moment is through PC World. http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/computing/desktop-pcs/desktop-pcs/hp-envy-750-179na-desktop-pc-10138705-pdt.html - or one similar. Can anyone advise on the compatability of this with PDR14. I'm aware that the i7 is top, but I have no idea about the graphics card. They all seem to have random numbers and I can't seem to find out much about each, or their compatability. (I was also intending to install a SSD for PDR work files.)

Matt .
PDR14; Win10-x64; i7-6700; 3.4GHz; 16GB RAM; plenty of HDD space; AMD Radeon R5 330.

You might want to buy a pc with the i7-6700k instead but then it won’t be a HP. The actual passmark for the r9 370 gpu is 4722 shown here: http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu.php?gpu=Radeon+R9+370&id=3469 . Most users here would go for the nVidia gtx 960 or 950 if they desire to do h.264 and hevc hardware encoding. The cost may only be a little more if you shop around.

1. What's the difference between the i7-6700 and the 'k'?

2. What's the difference between the Radeon and nVidia cards stated above? I have been 'Producing' most of my work in h.264 MP4 and would be happy to go for an nVidia if there is a significant difference.

The i7-6700 is clocked at 3.4Ghz while the i7-6700k is clocked at 4.0Ghz and can be overclocked. See this comparison: http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i7-6700K-vs-Intel-Core-i7-6700 . For a $35 difference it is worth it.

In the past the AMD cards also accelerated mpeg-2 and wmv video with hardware encoding when using the right drivers. The nVidia cards listed above are faster than the AMD cards for encoding h.264 and hevc according to many users and contributors in this forum.

This is very vague for your motherboard "Motherboard
Intel® H87"? No brand or specs for motherboard. Found this, is this correct?

"The H87 chipset is very similar to Z87, but lacks a few important features including CPU overclocking."

If so, don't get a overclockable CPU "K"

Is it just a bit of speed, or is there a significant difference?

From checking on line, getting a computer with the recomended hardware seems to increase the price significantly. The speed increase from 6700 to 6700k is a little over 15% (not sure about the graphics card), which in turn is a massive increase on what I have at the moment. I'm not sure the price hike is worth it.

As far as building my own, I might have done that 10/15 years ago, but I'm not as sure about my abilities these days - not to mention it might cost a lot more.

Thanks for your thoughts, guys. Much appreciated.

Truthfully, it's MUCH easier to build your own today and you'll get allot more bang for your buck. Prebuilt always skimps on something. Asus X79-Deluxe, Intel i7-4930K, EVGA GTX 980ti, G.Skill memory 16GB, Corsair HX1000 PSU, OCZ Vertex4 SSD, OCZ Vector180 480GB, (2)Western Digital Black 1TB(RAID0), Western Digital 2TB, LG Blue Ray Burner, Lite-on DVD Burner, Logitech G19 keyboard, Window
