Power Director 12 Issues...

Well after about a year of relativly trouble free video edditing I am now having trouble with my PD12. I Was getting a couple of issues. Firstly I would get more or less to the end of making a video & the whole thing would crash, just disapear from the screen with just a box left to report the issue to cyberlink. So I would load PD12 back up again & exactly the same thing happened and kept happening entil I restarted my PC. Of course everything previously that wasnt saved was lost and had to start from the last saved point.

Then another issue started. It went really slow, like if I was typing out a title it would take several seconds for each letter to appear or if I was moving a clip to the timeline it would freeze for a few seconds. Everything seemed to take at least 6 or 7 seconds to register to it worked, very very frustrating. So along with the crashing issues I uninstaled then reinstaled my PD12 along with the add on patches 1, 2 & 3 but not patch 6 as I suspect this is part of the problem. The sticky/slow aspect had gone but the crashing was still there. Soldered on for a few days with the same problem and decided to download patch 6 to see if its solved it. But no, back to the sticky/slow procces again which means i'll have to get it off my PC. How do I do that without going to system restore?

Does anyone out there have any idea what could be causing these issues? The last trouble I had was related to new upgraded drivers fitted, so I had to 'roll' them back and the issues were solved. Since then I havnt installed any new drivers and my PC dosent have many software downloads/upgrades as I only use it for my PD12 & I know how those things can affect the running of PD12. I Am using an Alienware 18 Laptop running Windows 8.1. Any help would be much appreaciated.

If you haven't installed anything new recently I would suspect that an auto-update of something in your system has compromised it's stability. I haven't read through the whole of your dxdiag (that stuff tends to make my brain go dead laughing) but I notice you have an Nvidia graphics adaptor and there have been many instances, discussed over a long period, about driver updates causing problems with various versions of Power Director. That sounds like a prime candidate for your problem. If you have the driver disc that came with the card you could try uninstalling the existing driver and installing the one on the disc. Alternatively you could look on the manufacturers website for an earlier version than currently installed.

If none of that helps I'd suggest you do try a System Restore. It's quite safe and won't affect your data in any way. It just sets the system components back to an earlier configuration.

Once you've resolved the problem I'd strongly advise you to set the updating settings of everything on the system to 'Notify'. Although I'll accept the notifications can be a little tedious at least you will know what is going onto your system and will be more easily able to pinpoint what causes any problems in the future. Regards,
Mike

It is possible that upgrading to the latest driver then rolling back left the Nvidia geforce experience installed. Check for it in the Control Panel/Add Remove program. Remove it if it is there. Those with Nvidia cards know this situation better.

Hello, Bestbass!

I noted that your problem might've started with those add-on patches. An earlier PD version I was using went "silly" on me once when I was editing some video in PD7, a pop-up appeared(I was "on-line" at the time, sometime after March, 2012) prompting me to download a "patch" for PD7 that was supposed to improve its function. It did exactly the opposite! PD7 which, prior to that patch, had worked perfectly, after the patch it became erratic, crashing often on the tinyest of things! Split a clip to add a transition.... CRASH! Pull a clip onto timeline.... CRASH! My solution was an uninstall, then reinstall from the disc without that patch, "All was well in the PD7 garden again!". Funny enough, when I got the next version(which I won't mention because some are getting annoyed with me for saying it, so I'll call it "Voldemort"[after Harry Potter's nemesis]... that which must not be named... ha-ha), I was advised to install a certain patch with it after installation, interestingly enough, for this "Voldemort" version, only one patch was ever created. Installation of that patch created no issues and the version worked fine and continues to do so alongside my current version, PD14 Ultra, but I've avoided patches for PD14, based on my PD7 experience, which brings me back to my suggestion to you. If you have your installation disc for PD12, uninstall, then reinstall without any of the patches. This might help with your issues.

Cheers!

Neil.

P.S., Tomasc and others have suggested looking at your Nvidia card installation, this tip is valid as a possible extra cure for your problem.
