Stuttering/freezes in PD14

Hi

I got a Lenove D30 station with 2 Xeon 8core CPUs, 16GB and flash drive with plenty of available capacity and Nvidia GTX 760 w/2GB. I'd say that's more than good enough spec.

Whenever I do work in PD14, I get frequent occasions where the program becomes unresponsive. I usually edit 1080/50p raw data (.mov). Navigating the timeline, zooming in/out of the timeline, adding/editing effects, transitions etc, seem to cause stutter/freezes to the application. The OS is just fine (Win7 64bit), task manager shows cores are near idle and RAM is kept well below at the 50% (8GB) mark.

Are there any known issues that are to be fixed with an upcoming patch/fix?

As a sidenote, it also strikes me that out of the total of 32 available HT cores, 14 HT cores are completely idle when doing rendering (heavy stuff including downconverting to 720/24p from 1080/50p. Are there scalability limits in PD14 relative to number of cores it can keep busy?

Thanks

Alex.

Hi SakellarisAlex,
Please provide some additional data for members.
1. Do you have QuickTime installed?
2. Please provide a PC diagnostic, see guide Part B.
3. See Part A in the guide, please provide the information.
4. Source material data, Please provide the MediaInfo on the mov files you're editing. See guide, Part J.
5. A screenshot of the Edit workspace with your project insitu please. See Part E & F in the guides.

You do have a powerful computer and yes, there have been issues for some mov media files and with Nvidia gpu's drivers.

5. I don't think this will help you much.

I can send you the DxDiag output with a PM if you like.

thx

Are you trying to edit very compressed files?
I get that with MP4 files, but if I convert to AVI Cineform YUV files it runs smooth as butter.
Are you editing from a slower HDD? Asus X79-Deluxe, Intel i7-4930K, EVGA GTX 980ti, G.Skill memory 16GB, Corsair HX1000 PSU, OCZ Vertex4 SSD, OCZ Vector180 480GB, (2)Western Digital Black 1TB(RAID0), Western Digital 2TB, LG Blue Ray Burner, Lite-on DVD Burner, Logitech G19 keyboard, Window

Hi!

Skibum has just again made reference to this elusive "Cineform AVI". If I attempt to select AVI, even at the lowest setting, the file size when rendered would swallow up more hard-drive space than I care to use, that's at DV-AVI. If I select the only other option, Windows AVI, this will not support 16:9 aspect ratio, so either way, AVI is not for me. But Cineform AVI? I've not seen the option, nor am I likely ever to see it! It's just not there! As to stuttering and freezing, I too get this on occasions. But I just give a few minutes for the computer to "catch up" and continue working. If I click to hurry things up, the screen whites over and I get a message asking me to close the programme or wait for it to respond, I usually choose to close.

The high bit rate of 46 Mbps and 50p source material is probably the reason for the slowdown. 4 GB for 12 minutes of video. Having multiple tracks can make it worse. Two things can be done. One is to reduce the preview resolution to high or normal. The other is to enable shadow files. The mov format is not a good one for windows.

Skibum has a good point about converting to the cineform codec. See this link on the SMETE cineform codec. It is a high performance standard: https://www.smpte.org/news-events/news-releases/gopro%C2%AE-cineform-codec-standardized-smpte%C2%AE-vc-5-standard .A fast hard drive or ssd and the Magic Solution can be useful here. Sorry to contribuite to possibly steering the thread off course a little, but this is a side note to Neil.

If you read the information in the link tomasc posted, you'll see that the CineForm option is NOT available in PDR, so it's a good idea to stop looking for it laughing It's an intermediate codec used for converting high resolution/bitrate video into an AVI or MOV wrapper. In the same way that Magic YUV helps in the editing phase, so does CineForm.

This video might help - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6tfFPMB9xE

Just download GoPro studio. Convert your files there to Cineform. Then edit with PD14. Huge difference. Yes, it uses allot more space. Welcome to HD video editing. I will try the http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/46177.page and see what goes..

However, I should point out that my rendering display is not in HD... still, I get stutters even without playing back anything... just navigating the timeline and adding/removing effects etc.. All of my source and target files are on flash drives with more than 50% capacity free.

Today, after 5 hours of render time (Produce), with a status of 100%, and has sat there for 2 hours... windows resource monitor shows absolutely no activity for PD.exe (either disks, or threads/ram)...

Magic+PD will be my last shot at this.. then I'll move to some other editing program... already tried out a few with very smooth interface navigation and no stuttering whatsoever.
