YouTube aspect ratio on Mobile device issue

Hi all

I have spent hours putting together a music video made of various clips recorded on different mobile phones. To get the best view of them all in PD14, I used 4:3 as 16:9 was pretty rubbish for the clips recorded in portrait.

I produced it as an .AVI clip (I tried both x265 variations but the sound was not great on the base) and uploaded it to YouTube. It did not fill the screen correctly when I played it, so I used a combination of the below formatting tags to make it as full size as possible...

yt:quality=high: Defaults to a high quality stream (available based on the size of the viewer’s player and the size of the browser window)

yt:crop=16:9: Zooms in on the 16:9 area, removes windowboxing

yt:stretch=16:9: Fixes anamorphic content by scaling to 16:9

yt:stretch=4:3: Fixes 720x480 content that is the wrong aspect ratio by scaling to 4:3

yt:crop=off: Deactivates cropping effects on the video and re-establishes cropped areas

....however when i play it on a mobile device, the image is small again and does not fill the screen as much as when i watch it on a desktop/laptop.

Here is a link to the video if you wanted to test it/see what I mean: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5FAaUAvWg4

If anybody can help so that I can get this video looking the same on all devices that would be greatly apprciated.

Yours hopefully

Nick

You problem is the video was shot with a cell phone in vertical orientation.

This video explains.

There is no good way to correct for a video what was shot with a cell phone in Vertical orientaiion. Carl312: Windows 10 64-bit 8 GB RAM,AMD Phenom II X4 965 3.4 GHz,ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB,240GB SSD,two 1TB HDs.

I'll try not to be offended by that link!

I know half the videos are in portrait (which I hate - preaching to the choir) but I fixed the issue when watching on a laptop. Yes the vertical clips have big black spaces either side - these I'm not worried about. It's the clips horizontal clips where they shrink in size and are surrounded by black..

Look at the difference watching the first clip on a laptop then a mobile. On a laptop it looks fine, wide-screen with just bars at the top, but on a mobile it has a black box all around it. There must be a way to get it looking the same on a mobile as it looks on a laptop?

If anyone could help I'd be over the moon.

Many thanks

On that YT link the entire video is too wide. This is true for both the landscape and the portrait video clips in the produced video as seen on my monitor. Simply producing that video on a 16x9 timeline is sufficient. No need to stretch it again and again.

Hi!

A similar(themed) thread elsewhere prompted my reply and I feel I should state the same thing here. I wish they never put cameras in these mobile phones! The primary purpose of such a device is communications on the move.... that's all! There's a plethora of top-quality videocameras on the market that can give near-professional-looking results, so why waste time with the mediocre result of a very ordinary camera in a device tht's not really intended for such use? Well, I've had my rant & rave! I feel so much better now!

laughing

Cheers!

Neil.

(P.S. - this was copy-pasted as the first attempt to submit went "kerblooey" and the save failed. I managed to copy what I've written and paste it into a fresh reply panel.)

nickyb1982,

Youtube is Youtube, the player does what it does.

If you upload a video that is not actually 16:9 or 4:3 Aspect Ratio, the Youtube player will "Window Box" the video. Window Box is adding black on both the top, bottom and the Sides.

Youtube specifications for video and audio.

https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/4603579?hl=en

You already know about the formatting tags.

https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/146402?hl=en

Recommended upload encoding settings

https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/1722171?hl=en

Not meeting those conditions, will cause the Youtube player to do what it does, which is undetermined.

I don't think anyone understands me.

I'm aware of the correct dimensions to upload to YouTube and i know mobile videos are far from ideal. I did not go out of my way to create a video using mobile phones. I had collected the clips, and THEN wanted to make a video out of them as I had a good idea for a music video.

I uploaded to YouTube, had an issue with some of the clips, including the first one having a black box around it - however I fixed this so that these clips appeared widescreen, but the problem remains when viewed on a mobile...

I don't want a lecture on how not to upload vertical mobile phone clips, I juts want to know if there is ANY fix to make the problem clips fill more of the screen on a mobile device. Whether there is a tag I can use, or producing it as a different file format, or anything.

If anyone has an idea I'd love to hear.

Thank you

Google search "Youtube and Mobile Devices"

https://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4GGHP_enUS563US563&q=youtube+and+mobile+devices

Mobile devices are unique in that their screen is not a standard size, most are small screens, which makes it very hard to create web content that fits the Mobile device platform.

Hi nickyb1982 -

I agree with tomasc - the video, throughout, is stretched horizontally when viewed on a monitor. When viewed on my iPhone, the aspect ratio looks right.

So - what you've posted is partly right. There is some inconsistency between how different devices display your video. All other YT videos I just compared play correctly in both.

Again, tomasc's advice to simply insert all your clips on the timeline & produce to a 16:9 profile. I don't know why you produced to AVI surprised The clips from the phones were probably MP4 & YouTube would re-process your AVI in any case. Why no produce to MP4?

Neil - I'm glad you feel better after your rant, but you're ignoring the facts. People use smart devices for a variety of purposes, without the need to carry around a case full of equipment. What you're suggesting about video quality isn't completely correct either. *This video* was shot on an iPhone & edited on an iPad. Come on man - catch up! laughing

Cheers - Tony

Tony! Thank you my man!

Carl, thanks for the Google search (that I obviously tried already). However this search brings up answers to the question 'my mobile does not play at all on mobiles' - this is not the problem I am having! I am not explaining the same thing again anymore.

Tony, I produced to AVI because the audio did not sound as good whenproduced to MP4, I don't know why.

That's crazy that it fits perfectly on your iPhone screen - I'm going to double check on my girlfriend's iPhone. On my Xperia Z it has a black box around it.

I'm going to try swtiching to 16:9 in PD14 and producing again... (I chose 4:3 originally because you got more image out the vertical clips but maybe that's the best of a bad bunch of final outcomes it could be. Let's see...)

Thanks for your help
