Are we limited to square/rectangle crops in PD5? Tom

Hello there tpallred1,

Welcome to the PhD forum "laughing"

Under Adjustment > Manual, we are limited to rectangular cropping. To crop an image in any other way in PhD is a "roundabout" process, even though many graphics programs do it in a single step. But, it's possible.

The screenshots below show the steps:

  • Send the photo to Photo Composer (1)

  • Import an oval/circular mask to overlay (1)

  • Save As sends your modified photo to the library (2)

  • Send it to Edit > Background Removal and select the background (2)

  • Remove the mask & Save to a .png file (3)

""

I know it's ridiculously complicated, but that's the only way to do it in PhD. If you'd like to save time, just open your favourite graphics software and crop "laughing"

I've attached the mask I used if you want to play with it.

Another beautiful " How To Do It" from Pix.

I thought I'd have a try to see if I could do something similar using just PhotoDirector.

First off, I created an oval mask changed the graduation to 0 and then inverted the mask.

From there I changed the exposure, brighteness, contrast to -100.

Almost did it!

I had to create another oval mask using the same settings to get a clean black.

Oval masking to create a black mask

Ummm, how about a white oval mask?

Same procedure as above except change exposure, brightness and contrast to +100.

I also had to change everything else including Focus to -100 ONLY the Noise Reduction/Luminance to +100

I had to create 5 masks intotal before I could remove all the black from the white oval!

White oval created using masking

Was it worth it? .... I'll leave that up to you.

You can spin the masks to different angles if you so desire, bit of fun!

Cheers

Thanks, I'll try those. While waiting I fired up Gimp, figured out how to use it, created several pictures using it, and the task was done. Pretty good for a first-timer. Tom
