Audio but no video is a very different scenario to "washed out" looking video. For the former my first guess would be a codec problem but for the second I'd be looking to graphic display driver settings - as I say only best guesses.
It's important to know at first hand whether you get a specific problem with one file on many computers/devices
(have you yourself tried playing a file that has caused problems on several different computers to verify the problem).
p.s. Before I retired I found myself in a similar situation a number of times ( I used to, among other things, produce CD's and DVD's that were distributed to our local schools). I solved the problem by only producing to completely compatible file formats either .wmv or standard DVD's.
