surround sound 5.1 for video project

Is using the surround sound panning tools awkward when making a video project to burn to disc in PD? For instance if there is a fairly long complex project on the timeline that has multiple audio tracks does one have to go back and forth from PD to audio director to ajust the surround pan for each audio clip on each track? Or once in audio director can you stay in that mode and adjust the panning for all the audio tracks without going back and forth from PD to audio director?

thanks,

Hello HT,

This suggestion assumes, possibly incorrectly, that you need to edit all the audio in the same way.

Rather than going backwards & forwards (or round & round) between PDR & ADR, you could produce your project with 5.1 audio - and send the complete audio file to ADR for editing.

If different adjustments are needed for different sections of audio, that suggestion will be of no help at all.

Thanks for your reply. Your suggestion will work for some tracks.

I have a general question about surround sound since I just installed my system. To get the best effect should I have audio come only from the front speakers and then use the rear speakers only when it seems appropriate for some sounds. Or should I set the audio panner in the middle so some sound is always coming from all the speakers all the time and use the rear speakers for additonal sounds.

thanks,

Hello HT,

The first question to consider is whether the original audio was recorded in 5.1 format. Some video cameras have microphones capable of recording in this format, picking up sounds from different angles. In studio recordings, the different channels are used to mix dialogue, music & sound effects (recorded separately).

I only mentioned the above because what's called 5.1 surround sound can play back very differently. The most basic difference is discrete (different sounds in each channel) & matrixed (audio in one channel is reflected in others). You'll see & hear this when you are using different 5.1 audio in ADR.

What audio are you mixing? It sounds like you're using stereo source material & mixing it across the 6 channels. If that's the case, I'd just set the pan at centre so the same audio is fed to each speaker/channel. In a studio mix, you'd typically find dialogue balanced toward the front and sound effects to the rear.

I can now see why my initial suggestion cannot work for you in this case, because the audio is not yet mixed as you wish.

Thanks for you suggestions. You are correct, I am mixing stereo. I have one more question. If there is no voice recording and the audio is stereo background music should I mute the center channel to get better stereo separation?
