Do all these "DVD Menus" magically go HD when used for creating Blu-Rays?
[Post New]
I've been all over DirectorZone, which appears to be filled with nothing but DVD menus (and other content so laughably unusable that it appears it was all created by legions of bored 11-year old little girls. Seriously.)

Main Problem: Nearly 500 pages of DVD menus and not one single HD BluRay menu is found. "16:9" does not automatically mean "HD", and if not HD, then these DVD menus are unusable for any BluRays that one is interested in taking seriously. In PowerDirector's Preview mode, these menus become all grainy and pixelated - unacceptable on disc and big screen TVs.

So where does one go to find true HD (1080) menus for BluRay disc creation in PowerDirector? Or do all of these DVD Menus magically go HD when burned to a BluRay disc?

Thanks

Hi Highwinder -

CyberLink provides the DZ space for users to upload/share their "creations". That in itself doesn't determine quality! CL doesn't control (a) who uploads or (b) what they choose to upload. Interestingly, the majority of PDR users are 55+ males. I guess the majority of the 55+ males don't bother about uploading things to DZ. I don't disagree with you, at all, by the way! Maybe DZ needs a "grown-ups" section laughing

On DZ, they're labelled/categorised as "DVD Menus". Disc menus would be more accurate because they're used for all discs.

To your question: If the menu in question was formatted with a 1920x1080 (or better) background, it will be Full HD and look perfectly acceptable played from a BR disc to a Full HD (or better) TV.

If the user happened to use a lower res background image - well - you know what will happen.

For example, this one - http://directorzone.cyberlink.com/detail/135969011 (not made by a school girl) used a 1280x720 background image so it will be upscaled by the BR player. This one - http://directorzone.cyberlink.com/detail/131986054 - has a 1920x1080 background, so it will be much cleaner on screen.

Agreed, the preview resolution in Create Disc is pathetic... but it's no indication of the quality achieved when burnt to BR.

Cheers - Tony

Thanks for the reply, it's a good one.

So I'm almost afraid to ask this question:

How does one sort / search for / or otherwise determine the resolution of the image prior to download on a web site with almost 500 pages of DVD menus? How does one weed out the junk?

There's no way of determining that before you download a menu from DZ. After it's downloaded, you can check in C:\Users\Public\CyberLink\Downloaded Menus\menu\background Check the properties of the background image & you'll know.

The simplest thing to do is:

  • Download a menu you like the layout of

  • Modify it by adding your own high resolution background (image or video)

... or build you own from scratch - then you'll know it wasn't made by a teen whose visual taste doesn't align with yours laughing

Yeah, that's what I was afraid of. Thanks for the tips though, I truly appreciate it.

Hi Highwinder -

I've just found something about those background images that relates directly to your original question.
