GoPro Video footage color correction question

I have read that shooting in RAW is the best way to have control in getting gopro colors correct through editing.

I've tried, but I never seem to have the control of colors that I think I need. I have PD13 and of course GoPro studio and need recommendations on how best to get the colors to pop and be captivating.

How do you advanced users get the desired results? What settings should I use on my Hero 3 to help this endeavor? What, if anything, do I need to add in terms of software? What procedures are used during editing to achieve this goal.

This obviously a lot information to ask for but I am returning to Vietnam for the first time since being there 46 years ago. I want the very best video I can produce using the Gopro and my Sony Handicam.

Thanks in advance. Charlie

I own and use 4 GoPro's for my action activities......using manual correction in post is IMO a art that takes time to master. After playing around some, I decided that shooting in the normal modes was the best for me in just about every instance. It seems that when shooting in RAW everything needs attention, while shooting in normal maybe just one....When shooting in low light, quality does drop off, not sure how much you fix those issues in post anyway...

When using my GoPro as a non action camera, I shoot in 1080 Narrow 30 fps.

I'm not sure which model you have, but someone on here a while back did an extensive post showing the advantages of protunes mode. You may try that out before your trip to see if it helps. I believe it improved contrast which made colors more vibrant. __________________________________

G'day Charlie -

Confession: I don't have a GoPro, but I have helped edit (colour grading) my son-in-law's GoPro Hero4 Black clips shot both in Protune Auto & Protune Cam Raw modes.

You said "Hero3". According to this chart the Hero3 doesn't have Protune... though I think the Hero3 Black does.

So - depending on the model you have, it could be hypothetical. The other thing to consider is that colour grading adds a lot of time to the editing process. You need to be keen! I can tell you that after a day sitting with me editing, my son-in-law decided not to shoot in Protune Cam Raw again! He's more into board riding than sitting at a PC!

Protune Auto (as opposed to Cam Raw) is a much simpler thing to apply. It sorts out white balance & churns out less compressed clips at a higher bitrate than if you shoot without Protune.

There's plenty of information available from experienced protune users:

Tony,

My GoPro is a Hero3 Black edition. It does have protune. Thank you for the cineform blog link, I will check it out. A bit of advice please: Protune on or off? 1080P 60FPS or? Process clips in Cineform and edit in PD13 or?

Paul,

I have had the GoPro Hero3 Black and I normally shoot in 1080P, 60FPS. I use Sandisk class 10, 64 GB cards. I have had it for about a year and a half and have shot over a hundred movies. However, these were almost exclusively shot from a helmet mount while riding a dual sport motorcycle.

I am quite concerned about filming while walking as due to an old injury I limp a bit. I cannot afford a Feiyu 2 axis so I am just going to have to wing it and use stablizing software to sort things out.

Charlie -

Having never shot a single frame with a GoPro, I'll leave the advice on that to others. P.S. I am about to shoot LOTS of frames with this when it arrives Inbuilt stabilization.

I think your current choices and workflow sound fine, if you're happy with what you're getting out of your GoPro. Paul's advice is spot on - do some testing using (& editing) Protune in both modes. e.g. shoot a similar sequence in various modes and see what works best for you. No doubt, your trip back to Nam will leave you with many hours of clips... if you shoot it in ProTune Cam Raw, that'll be that. You'll have to process it before editing.

N.B. Don't bother testing Protune in low light!

I understand what you mean about shooting while walking with such a light camera. It'll wobble all over the place with or without the limp! I also have a little Sanyo Xacti that's prone to camera shake. Without using a steady cam device, two things that have helped with that are (a) mounting the camera on a monopod for walking (b) holding the top of the camera to my lip (the head is steadier than the hand). Not anywhere near as good as a steady cam, but cheaper!

Cheers - Tony

I just cam back from shooting a video from my motorcycle. I tried Protune 1080p 60fps medium view. I am editing and will post up when done.

The reason I wanted to do it on a moving vehicle is we are going to be taking the "Reunification Express Train" from HCMC to Hanoi (1000 miles). I want video of the country side as we go.

I plan to use a suction cup mount to mount the camera to the window. So comparatively the moto vs the train will provide some of the same up and down, rocking and rotational movement. We will see once these clips have processed. Charlie
