Problem with making DVD
[Post New]
I am having problems with making a DVD from XAVC S files as follows.

I have shot some 4K files using the Sony FDR-AX100 Camcorder in XAVC S and I have no problem with editing and putting onto a hard drive. The quality & resolution is fantastic.
Its when I "Create Disc" DVD that the end result is absolutely terrible, full of artefacts and not very watch able. Needless to say it should not be like this so I am wondering what is going wrong.

I Have used the very same XAVC S files and used Pinnacle Studio {just to make sure its not me} and that did a fine job so what could I be doing wrong I wonder.
I checked the procedure for making the DVD and could not find a reason for this.
Your help appreciated.

I have passed your observation onto CyberLink for them to investigate.

Did not find your post right away, sorry.

I made a HD BR DVD about 4 weeks ago with material from the AX100 and playing it now, from 6" away it looks nearly as good as a 4K feed from a hard drive to the 4K TV. Defects are minute and negligible. Resolution is of course lower.

Format is AVC at 60FPS P. VBR 40Mb max.

There is no menu but plenty of chapters, transitions etc.

I suspect you tried 60FPS interlaced ?

Let me know the procedure you used, I will try to replicate it.

Hi Eugene,
I see you are talking about making a Blu Ray.

In my case I am making a DVD and you cannot choose anything other than "smart fit" or "HQ best quality of which neither make any difference to the terrible artefact quality.

I not burn these because it should not make any difference to the PQ. BR HD. Settings PD13 preset

1) 30 FPS interlaced, MPEG2 format 26Mb, not as good as the 60P but acceptable viewing

2) 30FPS interlaced, AVC 264 format, bit rate only 17Mb.
picture worse, more artifacts, likely due to low bitrate.
Viewable but I would reject it.

Eugene

PS, will try a DVD after reading your post.

John, unfortunately you are correct.

The DVD version created from 264 4K material (not limited to AX100) looks just ghastly, must be a lousy codec. Just unusable.

You may have to stick with Pinnacle a while longer or use HANDBRAKE for the conversion.

This reminds me about picture quality, in ca 1962, I was building a video tape recorder in my spare time after working hours. One evening an engineer stopped in the lab while I was playing a video and said : Gene, you are making progress, I can now tell Huntley from Brinkley.
For the younger generation, H and B did the evening network newscast.

Just made an other test, outputting via "PRODUCE" using SD settings. Looks just as awful, so it appears to be the codec.

Thank you Eugene for your help in checking my findings.

Dam, I was hoping I was doing something wrong but somehow knew I wasn't.

I have to wonder why Cyberlink has not picked this this up a long time ago as it is one of the core jobs, to create a DVD.

I see that Dafydd has passed this problem onto Cyberlink for investigation which is great and can only hope that solution is speedy forthcoming.

wrathofkhan, can you post a sample of your raw 4K files shot using the Sony FDR-AX100 Camcorder in XAVC S? I don't know exact upload limit of this site but I'm thinking 5sec will be okay in size.

Jeff,
I get the same horrid results, especially with motion, when using downloaded 4K 264 30FPS P material. Outputting in SD DVD 60FPS P looks ok while interlaced is poor.

Eugene, yes, I read your result issue. My results to DVD look fine, at least as good as any other DVD, surely not horrid, hence the request made to wrathofkhan. I put a whole wedding of 4k XAVC ~60Mbps 30p (friend supplied) to basic DVD MPEG2 ~8Mbps and all looks fine, basic DVD quality. Obviously looks better on BD, but nothing horrid on DVD.

Not saying there's not a issue, I really doubt a codec issue though, possibly something in PD or details of source and PD. Creating dummy source 4k XAVC 30p in PD from any footage and then going to DVD also results in non horrid DVD's for me.

I will need to learn how to post RAW footage on this forum.

To add further info / findings as follows.

I have just finished editing some older filming [about a month ago} which I did with the Panasonic 920 in 1080/50p and when I "create disc" DVD using PD 13 the DVD is as good as it gets for a DVD.

So it becomes obvious to me that the filming done in XAVC S 4K, when using PD 13 to "create disc" makes a really bad, virtually un watchable DVD and the filming done in 1080/50p when using PD 13 to "create disc makes a very good DVD. It has to be something that PD 13 is doing.

1) Return to the forum thread and click "postreply" button in the bottom left corner of thread, not the "Quick Reply".
2) Click the "Attachments" button just underneath the text input window and attach the file(s) by browsing to appropriate location.

Will be interesting how this pans out. Basically SD DVD using progressive looks much better than the same in interlaced.

I have some good news.
Since installing the very latest patch 13.0.2604.0 everything now seems to to all good.
Have just done a DVD copy of an XAVC S film {shot on a Sony AX100} and the results are fine now with the quality being the same as a typical DVD as I have done in the past from 1080/50p.

I must thank you all for your input.
