4k playback grainy and choppy in preview window

Hi gang,

Having some problems during playback of 4k clips in the preview window after loading into the timeline.
Video playback is grainy, choppy, and many times, the video will stop.

If I select and highlight a single clip in the library, it'll playback perfectly in the preview window.
Why is this happening?

What's the preview resolution setting? Try a lower res. Your PC, though it seems capable, may not be able to keep up with the complexity of your project. Dedicated graphics memory may be low: it's 965Mb here on a lesser system.

You might also look under OPTIONS|HARDWARE ACCELERATION and UNcheck "Hardware Decoding" if it's selected. Or the opposite.

Under OPTIONS|GENERAL, disable "HD Video Procession" (shadow files).

Also check for an updated video driver, from the chip manufacturer's WEB site...

http://geforce.com/drivers (NVidia)
http://support.amd.com/en-us/download (AMD)
http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/detect/graphics (Intel)

Attaching a dxDiag text file to your next post could help others diagnose the problem. For instructions, see the Welcome
"sticky" at the top of this forum. Part B.

Hi borgus,

Solved the grainy video by reducing the resolution setting to HD. I had it set to high.

However, playback in the preview window is still stopping for 5 to 10 seconds.

Checked my video driver and it is up to date.
Disabling HD Video Procession and Hardware decoding didn't make any difference.

I had only 3 clips into the timeline. Each clip is only about 10 seconds each.

Hi Keala555 -

What's the source of the 4K clips? Which camera? Could you post the properties of the clips from MediaInfo - especially the video bitrate.

Some cameras record 4K video @ ~100MBps, which is going to be extremely difficult for an i5 with no dedicated GPU to handle. You may be dealing with high end clips without a high end PC. Forum members with MUCH more powerful PCs have reported issues editing 4K.

Cheers - Tony

Intel HD Graphics 4600 is helping a lot with the 4K video, but you need the latest drivers from Intel for this (dated 1/12/2015, ver 15.36.14.64.4080):

Hi Tony,

I'm using a Sony FDR-AX-100 for my camera.
The short 3 clips were recorded at 3840X2160@30p

Bitrate, according to Sony is 100Mbps.

Thanks for the link SoNic67.
I'll have to check again on the version that I have. My computer said two days ago that I have the latest drivers.

I just updated my drive with 15.36.14.64.4080.
Still getting choppy stop/go video in the preview window.
The audio seems to work fine and keeps playing all the way through to the end of the clips in the timeline.

My brother also bought a Sony FDR-AX100. He is running it through his new iMac with 5k retina display.
The computer also has an Intel i5 like mines. I have 12GB of RAM, as opposed to only 8GB in the Mac.
He has no problems with viewing choppy video.

Borgus, I'll have to check tomorrow with my local computer guru when they open. 64MG of dedicated video memory is seems low as you say. Found out that this graphics card has no real video memory, and is actually getting the 64MG from RAM.

Heard I'll have to get into the computers BIOS to make an adjustment, or go with a dedicated video card if there is a PCI express X16 slot available on the motherboard.
Thanks for your help in fixing the grainy video!

Thanks for the link Paul,

Solved the picture quality already, but still problems with video stopping and going in the preview window.

Just added in a Radeon video card and upgraded my processor to an i7.
Playback in the preview window is running smooth.

Thanks Borgus1, and everyone for your input!

Hi Keala555

Hope you have Updated today Pd13 to 2604 Nice

Fixes the issue that 2K/4K video resolution is incorrect when produced with NVIDIA GPU hardware encoding enabled.

As a point of interest, I had the exact same problems that Keala555 had. http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/41808.page

After a lot of research I discovered that my motherboard, an Asus Q87-T, had an option called GPU Boost. After activating the boost in BIOS, the problems encountered have, in the main, gone, and PD13 now handles my 4k files quite well. Panny TM10, GH2, GH4,

I bought PD13 a few days ago and am experiencing the same problems as Keala555. I am not a computer 'whiz' by any means, and most of the solutions above are total gobble-de-gook to me. I am sure that all you guys know what you are talking about, but nothing in the Cyberlink 'blurb' warns the likes of me that you need to be a computer expert to sort these problems out! I paid £60 for software that I expected to be able to use 'out of the box'. I am disappointed, frustrated and wondering if I should have bothered!

Hi Nick

Do not panic at this stage. I have used PD versions for several years now and in my experience it is one of the best for us amateurs.

Is this problem happening only with 4k files or is it occurring throughout?

I have a 4k camera and I upgraded to PD13 because it claims to work well with 4k, but this will only happen if your computer is up to it.

Mine is top notch i7 processer and 16 gb ram, but still had major problems working with 4k. I did some research and found that I could boost the graphics with an option in the motherboard called GPU boost. After doing this it seems to work quit well.

So first you need to find out a little bit about your computer and what it is capable of:

I am assuming that you are using Windows. So go to the "start" button and type dxdiag. Then post what it says about your processor and RAM - then go to the display tab and post what it says about your graphics card.

The above will help the people on this forum better explain why you are having problems.

Do not give up yet Panny TM10, GH2, GH4,

Paul,

Thanks for the heads up on the new update. Just updated to the 2604 patch.

Shadowman, I checked in my computers BIOS for the GPU boost but there was no setting in my computer to make this change, so I got the video card. Thanks.
