Dots with DV type I or II video

When I produce videos to DV-AVI, the resulting video has faint dots in a pattern like the dots and boxes (squares) paper game. At work, I use Corel Visual Studio 5 and it does not have this problem when it produces video to DV Type I, so I'm led to assume that there is something wrong with how PowerDirector encodes with DV-AVI.

This is not new to PowerDirector 13 (happens in 11 also, probably in 12 too, but never used 12), but I have not seen any mention of this on the forum or elsewhere.

I have an example picture here:

That same picture zoomed in 4x (upper left corner):

Another example zoomed 4x:

I'm curious if anyone else has the same results when producing to DV-AVI. I'm surprised I could find no mention of this problem whatsoever.

No response could mean no one is converting hi-def video to dv.

Go with the times. Dv bitrate is 25 mbps 480/60i and each frame is compressed individually whereas modern avchd or mp4 can be 1080/60p at much much lower bitrate using gop type compression. Boats.wmv is 720p with a bitrate of 6 mbps which is less than 1/4 that of dv. That low bitrate is probably why you see faint patterns of dots.

DV is meant to be a camcorder format only. To write back dv to a supported camcorder with full operating controls, editing features, smart rendering, etc. is best with done with older software like maybe PD7 or earlier.

I agree with you about going with the times, but the thing is, we use an expensive set-up with 10 year old video switching software (NewTek VT4) on a 10 year old computer that's picky with the video format. DV video was the standard back then, and that's about the only kind of video format that can play inside that software, so it's what we're forced to use.

The dots will appear with any kind of video source however, so the source video isn't the problem.

Thanks for your response though.

Good clarification. Since your 10 year old computer already has the switching and probably the editing software already, then all you need a conversion software. Super comes to mind and there are many others that converts HD video formats to mpeg-2 or dv. Some are freeware that you can try to see if it gives the quality you want. You can then do all your video editing on that computer.

I never tried to go back to DV from other format. Yes, I have the same results if I try the conversion in PD13.
I would suggest Super converter too... or get a new computer on the other end.
