Well, it is interesting to read about- and have a look-see.
But…..at this point in life I don’t snowboard, surfe, dive, climb mountains, hangglide,
skateboard, mountainbike……..
and I don’t even have a 80 square meter livingroom so I could possibly
watch 110 inch TV.
BTW; my internet connection can’t handle 4K.
I just watch circles most of the time.

Just something.

Actually, for a given TV screen size, the size of the room for a 4K TV should be smaller than for a 1080 TV.
This is because, in order to full see (resolve) all those lines, you need to be closer to the screen - human eye it is what it is...
See one of the view distance charts below:

PS: For the "metric land" people: 3 feet = 1 meter, 10 inch = 24.5 cm

FYI - The Blu-ray Disk Association (BDA) said they the expect to announce the new "Ultra HD Blu-ray" specification mid year (with end of year for HW and Discs), and it will support new profiles like:
- up to 3840 x 2160 @ 60fps
- 8 and 10-Bit Colour (HDR / REC 2020 / BT2020 / SMPTE ST 2084 / 2086)
- HEVC (H.265) encoding up to 128Mbps
- new disc capacities of 66GB dual layer / 100GB triple layer
- pass through for new Audio Formats (Atmos?)

More over at AVS

Also, while there were no 4K/50p cams for me at this CES, it seems it will not be far away

Why would you still care for 50fps at this point? I don't get it, is national pride?
Standard Definition TV is all dead (in Austraila from 10 December 2013) in most of civilized world.
We are talking about 4K and over and we are still hanging onto 50 vs 60fps? Just choose the highest one and done!

There are, but they use ProRes 422 format. Not supported in CL.

4k tv is definitely in my future. See this link: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/tvs/4k-ultra-hd-tvs/pcmcat333800050003.c?id=pcmcat333800050003&nrp=15&cp=1&sp=+currentprice skuidsaas . Under $600 US. When a tv need to be replaced then that replacement will be a 4k or 8k if one wait long enough. Sharp is working on a virtual 8k now.

Hi all!

4K video? What....? It'd have to be the hungriest beast alive for chewing up gigabytes by the ton! It would demand far too much of a computer's meagre resources to process. And these new 4K sets..... not in my little lounge room, I wouldn't be able to fit the creen into the small space I have, that's if I could afford the huge asking price.... but then I've got to ask myself: "Do I REALLY need this?" The answer would come back a deafening roar of NO!

Cheers!

Hello Neil.F.1955 ,

Hope you are doing well.I would like to say that may be 4k is not in boom today but it has many other features.

The name "4K resolution" refers to a horizontal resolution of approximately 4,000 pixels. The use of width to characterize the overall resolution marks a switch from previous television standards such as 480i and 1080p, which categorize media according to its vertical dimension. Using that same convention, 4K UHD would be named 2160p.

There are two main 4K resolution standards:

The 4K resolution standard, which has a resolution of 4096 x 2160 pixels. This standard is widely respected by the film and video production industry.

The DCI 4K standard has twice the horizontal and vertical resolution of DCI 2K.UHD-1, or ultra-high-definition television (UHDTV), is the 4K standard for television.

We might be able to approach this problem better by using vendor-specific development tools from AMD and Nvidi .But we can always fall back on the simplest thing: testing the hardware to see how it performs. UHD-1 is used in consumer television and other media, e.g. video games.
Many manufacturers may advertise their products as UHD 4K, or simply 4K, when the term 4K is traditionally reserved for the cinematic resolution .This often causes great confusion among consumers.

Hi, James!

By what you've written here, you're obviously an "insider" in the industry, either that or you've managed to digest all the written data from the tech "boffins" who put all this together. They are the only reasons why you have such vast knowledge of all this material.

For me, it boils down to need versus want. I might "want" all this new technology, but do I really NEED it? The answer there is a definite NO! What I have now, serves my purposes just fine.

Cheers!

Neil.
