I finally got a 4K TV, a Vizio P series 70" set and it looks like a keeper.

Its USB port will accept 4K 265 HEVC video material, downloads in that format work fine and look great as do 4K 264 conversions to HEVC created by the free software "HANDBRAKE", (SVN6446 nightly build 64 bit ver).

The same 265 HEVC 4K files created by PD13 cannot be played on that TV set, the image is 4 times bigger, that is only 1/4 appears on the screen. The TV info indicates the proper format for all files played, so does MediaInfo.

Bummer

Is that the project that you render for almost a week?

It might be a bug in the Vizio player - other players (like WMC-HC) have no issues with it?

Took the same USB PD13 265 HEVC stick to BestBuy, it will not play on a Sony as well but ok on a Panasonic.

The same video encoded by HANDBRAKE to the same 265 4K HEVC standard works fine on all 3, Vizio, Sony and Panasonic.

That's sad... I guess the format is so new that miss-understandings of standard will happen for a while.

Sadly the video industry has been like this for several years. Similar issues arose when AVC (h264) came along. And that was only 5 years ago !

There are no "standards". Only approximations. Win 10, i7

Welcome to the bleeding edge! I tested against LAV Filters on the PC and could not get a picture with HEVC in an MP4 container but it was fine in M2TS or MKV (I'm not even sure it is officially supported in an MP4 container but it is my M2TS and MKV).

FYI - some recent comments from Hendrik (aka Nevcairiel) the author of LAV Filters regarding the current state of play with HEVC.

A couple of thoughts:

- There is no encoder yet that can actually reach that promised goal (50% size at same quality). Best result right now is marginal space savings at the same quality. Expect years before that goal is reached, it took years for H.264 encoders to become "good".
- The only encoder being able to deliver that (x265) is much slower than a H.264 encoder would be, right now you can plan for like 12 hours for one movie, to get to a decent quality/space level.
- Decoding of H.265 is much slower than H.264, and there is no hardware acceleration, forget about playing those on a low-end system for the coming years (or god beware, mobile devices).

Personally, I think its at least 1-2 years too early to invest in H.265/HEVC.

I totally agree with that. I converted a 90 min 4K 264 to 4K 265 HEVC, took from Friday eve to Tuesday afternoon. We were on a cruise so I did not need the computer and it had auto shutoff.

My reason for encoding was the ability of our TV to play 4K 265 HEVC but NOT 4K 264 !!

I ordered a probox2 to play 4K 264 material via HDMI to the 4K TV. That way no conversions and PQ loss.

Thanks

Seems like a very good idea - I use HTPC's to do my decoding to the TV (just use them as a big Monitor). PD 64 Bit-Win10 64 Bit-32GB RAM-80TB HDD
