Chroma key - filling shapes with color

I'd like to have a moving shape recorded on green screen filled with color e.g. human siluette only black.
Is there any simple way to do it in PD11?

If you shoot your subject in silhouette against a green screen, the green can then be chromakeyed out - allowing the video, color, or image background that is on a lower track to be seen.

Keep in mind that the keying screen doesn't have to be green.

My thoughts are with proper screen lighting you can isolate your subject, then simply reduce the subject lighting/color to zero. You now have a silhouette.
Chroma out the backdrop and do as you wish.
I'll test the holes in my theory and get back to you.
I'm just trying to avoid the difficult job of pure silhouettes.

I have not tested yet, but I suspect Colordirector and it's motion tracking mask might be needed, as bringing the subject to zero would also affect the entire video, including the chroma backing.

Theoretically, Colordirector will work, but my chroma footage has a lot of movement, and to completely mask it would be very time-consuming.
Perhaps the first idea, silhouette lighting, might be best, but I haven't a clue on light placement, as you'll drown out the screen making it difficult to key.
I'd love folks to jump in here and add comments.

This would be a lighting problem.

You make a silhouette by having the light coming toward the camera with the person in front of the light.
The front of the person is not lighted.

If you shoot on a green screen, you should light the green screen evenly with separate lighting.

The technique is called backlighting.

I can't offer any first hand experience with this, but some people here seem to know exactly what is required - http://www.cinematography.com/index.php?showtopic=48447

Barry - I'd avoid the CDR motion tracking idea like the plague! The right lighting &/or green screen would get the best result, I'd think.

Yup, lighting.
I really wanted to find a use for the tracking mask, but it seems to be more of a novelty at this time, for me anyway.
Methinks a rather large screen, and some distance twixt it and the subject.
I'd love to see a photo of your light setup if...WHEN you pull this off.

Tony, Thanks for that link, that is an excellent description of a very good method to get silhouettes of multiple people on a stage.

Thanks for your help.

As described in the link (http://www.cinematography.com/index.php?showtopic=48447 ) lightning is a bigger organisational challenge.

I was rather interested in this:
"The very easiest way to shoot silhouettes is to shoot them as greenscreen shots. You then key them like normal, except instead of layering the actors onto another image you simply use the key mask itself as a black and white silhouette. It creates incredibly clean results"

How to do it in PD? I don't have colour director to play withy colours. I could buy one if I was sure that it works.
