(I make a monthly video presentation made up of clips from various activities and events.

Between different topics, I use Modify/Fade In, Modify/Fade out. Works perfectly.

And between clips of the same topic, I want one clip to fade INTO the next clip. I use Transitions/Fade. Sometimes this works so the previous clip fades INTO the following clip as I want. But there are times when it fades to black and then to the next clip. )

I notice that on the Transition/Fade that works properly, in the audio part of the clip under the Fade is a blue section that is entitled Gain. How is it that those that work right have that blue gain insert, and those that are not what I want, do not have that blue insert.

I use 4 modes of transition.
1 - (Fad In) Fade transition, placed at the beginning of the clip. acts only on video
2 - (Fad Out) Fade transition, placed at the end of the clip. acts only on video
3 - (Overlap) Fade transition, at the junction of two clips, I mainly use if I keep the audio of the video, to make smooth transition to audio.
4 - (Cross) Fade transition, at the junction of two clips I use when I add new audio.
In Cross, the audio of the video, drops to zero in the clip1, and rises to 100% in clip2

When you drag the transition to the timeline be sure that it straddles the cut/split point.

Placing it ahead of the split will create a transition to black|cut to next scene.

Placing it after the split will create a cut to black|transition to next scene.
