Why two video timelines? When would they be used?

What is the point in having two or more video/audio timelines? Wondering if I could use them to my advantage.

Probably getting in way over my head by asking, but I am interested.

Hi Betty15765,
Never be worried about asking a question, we were all new at something at one time.

Let me get you thinking about what you could do and then see if that helps you a) experiment, b) maybe answers you.

What if you wanted to add a video to a video by overlaying it on top of the main video and then have the new video as a smaller one? What if you tried that out, remember you can shrink the size of the new added video you've placed in track 2?
How about adding another video to track three and overlaying that as a smaller video, can you try that as well.
So you now have three video/audio tracks in use. Did you notice the third track pop in when you placed the video in track two and a 4th track popped in when you added to track 3.
You can add audio and video tracks manually of course. Have you done that yet?
When I edit a voice over I like to have it as Track 1, you can add an audio track and perhaps add music to it. I find it easier to have a single audio on top while I edit it or align other parts of the video to it.

I've asked you questions to get you thinking. Remember the TV news programs when they have multiple news reports etc - you can try making the same in PDR12 - you can do it.

Dafydd

PS. I don't believe in spoon feeding answers, I encourage editors to experiment and enjoy the frustration and the success of finding out themselves.

Each video track overrides the one above it, for picture-in-picture (PIP) and other effects. Multiple video tracks can be utilized.

Place video on the main timeline. Place another on the video track below. Modify that image to make it smaller, and it will appear as a PIP - the smaller image in the lower track will be nested into the main track.

Having separate audio tracks may facilitate project layout, and those tracks can be mixed together.

If I have a clip or two that I am working on, I could place on track 2, work on it there and it still will all run as one video. That is, if I place it so they run consecutively, one on track one and other on track two.

Thank you both.

Will play with it and see what I learn.

Absolutely. As track one completes, track two would begin. Experiment. ^_^

If the two videos do not overlap.

Track two will overlay (be on top of the video in Track1)

The order for display is Higher Numbered tracks overlay Lower Numbered tracks.
That can be changed with transparency, or adjusting the size of the video.

There are many Tutorials that demonstrate that fact.
