I just bought and downloaded PowerDirector 12 Ultimate today. At first it imported and played .mov files with no problems. I even produced a couple of videos with it. Just a few mins ago I wanted to make another video and when I try to drag and drop my .mov files into the project, it keeps throwing error messages at me. I can hear sound, but there is no video. I have attached the message I am seeing.

I am running on windows 7 home premium, quick time is fully updated, as is power director, I just updated my video drivers a couple days back too. Any help is appreciated.

Note - I just ran a small test with different file types. I used Any Video Converter and changed the .mov to several different formats. wmv, mp4, and avi. All of these formats also threw the error message on a 16:9 and 4:3 ratio, with the exception of .avi on a 4:3 ratio. Why would this be?

edit - I have taken a screenshot as well as included my dxdiag here.

GeoRanger - thanks for uploading your DxDiag file, and kudos for keeping your video driver current :

What version of PD do you have? Have you downloaded and installed the 2930 patch that was released a couple of days ago?

I don't see anything worrisome in the DxDiag file, other than you're using 4-year-old hardware which will struggle with some HD clips. Could you upload one of your source clips to see if anyone else has the problems you're experiencing?

Those media errors can happen for a number of reasons. Sometimes it's due to the clips being recorded with a not-quite-compatible codec, other times it's a temporary error that comes up when generating shadow files. Since a clip the where the error message came from is in the shadow files folder, it may help if you turn off that option under Preferences|General.

I am running PD Ultimate 12.0.2930.0

Here is one of my clips from a geocaching trip. I used a Fujifilm XP waterproof cam for all of my videos.

When I restart PD and import the video, it will work in the player (before.jpg)
When I drag it into the timeline it throws the error code (after.jpg)

Strange stuff...

Thanks for uploading the clip.

There's something definitely incompatible between that clip and PD12. On my system, PD12 crashes as soon as I try to preview the clip from the library Boom, it's gone and up comes the Crash Reporter window

OTOH, the clip plays fine when it's in the timeline, and I can play it and move the scrubber around without any problems. The audio plays as well.

I tested it with Windows Media Player (Win8.1) and VLC, and they had no trouble - so it's something about PD12 that's doing it. The first step now would be to make a report to Cyberlink's Tech Support and point them to this forum thread so they can test the clip. Maybe other forum members will have better luck, or maybe it'll fail on all systems.

You said that you had converted the clip to other formats but still had problems except for one 4:3 version. I've converted it to another MOV and to .mkv using FormatFactory (both with 16:9 ratio), and neither one crashes in my library or timeline. I've attached them here, so see if you can import and play these successfully.

Both videos would import and play, but as soon as I attempt to drag them into the timeline I get the error message. None of my videos, or yours have crashed PD, they just throw the error for me.

edit - I have reported my problem to customer support, and provided a link to this thread. This has been a really disappointing $100 spent. I'll try to keep the faith.

Hi georanger & optodata -

Down here in OZ, I'm struggling to find anything wrong with that clip... nor with optodata's conversions.

They ALL behave perfectly in the library & the timeline on a very modest system. i7 920 @2.67GHz 8GB RAM and a GTX 260. No errors. No boom! Nothing.

I checked the MediaInfo report & it didn't show anything outrageous.

This PC is running the K-Lite Codec pack. I don't know if that's having any impact or not.

Cheers - Tony

I've been trying to send cs my files via ftp, but I can't seem to connect to their server. I have tried using the k-lite codec as well, but it makes no difference as far as the error message goes. I already have quicktime, vlc media player, and windows media. It seems to me that its just something within PD12 that doesn't like me dragging files into the timeline.. Have you thought about re-installing your PowerDirector 12?

Your MOV video works in My PD 12 in both the library and on the timeline.

What steps should I take to do a proper re-install? Any need to use a registry cleaner or something else? Being that my purchase and download was 7 different files and took quite a long time to install, I'd like to do this right the first time. Also, should I re-download all the files for install, or would the ones still sitting in my firefox/downloads folder be ok?

Here's the Cyberlink utility designed to remove everything so you can start fresh. I may try it here to see if it resolves my crashes with your clips.

The previously downloaded files should work, because the installer automatically checks for corrupted files when you launch it.

EDIT: You shouldn't need to uninstall any of the content packs, but when you reinstall PD12 be sure to allow SmartSound and QuickTime to be installed if you're given those prompts.

Success! I can now play the original .mov clip in the library and timeline with no crashes or playback problems!

Here are my exact steps:
  • Use Programs and Features from the Control Panel to uninstall PD12
  • Download and run the cleaner utility for PD12
  • Reboot
  • Install PD12 (also QT* and SmartSound when prompted). Allow the installer to uninstall then reinstall WaveEditor 2 (if included in your purchase)
  • Clear the checkbox to Launch PowerDirector when the installation finishes, then close the window
  • Install the current v2930 update, and now leave the checkbox checked to launch PD

  • That's it! You'll just need to reenter your product activation key.

On my system opening up the "incompatible" .mov clip now works as expected, and I hope the same result awaits you

*It's OK if you receive a message that a newer version of QuickTime is already installed.

I tried to reinstall it twice. First time I went into programs and features and removed PD12, restarted my system, ran the cleaner, restarted again, reinstalled PD12, wasn't prompted for quicktime, clicked no on smartsound (already installed) , clicked no on wave editor (already installed). Tried running PD12 before running patch 2930 - it still threw the error. After running patch 2930 - error again.

On my second attempt I did everything the same except I uninstalled smartsound with PD12 on the initial step. Then during the reinstall phase I chose to install smartsound again. Still threw the error.

Third attempt. Removed PD12, quicktime, smartsound, and wave editor. Did everything the cleaner requires, updated PD12 and quicktime before launching. Still getting the error here. I'll post my dxdiag as requested.

Very strange. Can you re-run the DxDiag and post the results?

EDIT: Since you're having a problem with a .mov, I would recommend manually uninstalling QuickTime as well then let PD12 install it. You'll then want to manually update QT afterwards. You may also want to manually uninstall SmartSound as it relies on QT as well.

In your case, having various programs "already installed" as actually a liability since there's likely something incorrectly configured with them. Clearing them out and starting over is the best way to fix that.

geo - I didn't realize that you'd done all that work! If you update an existing post, nobody is alerted that you've made changes I only happened to notice when I refreshed the page after not seeing any activity notices come to my email.

In any case, everything looks right with your DxDiag (that I can see), and if you've uninstalled/reinstalled the items as stated you should be set. Since you've also tried the k-lite codec pack, I can only think of two things that might help. Each is a bit of a stretch, but they've each been the key to some difficult challenges in the past.

The first, and most informative, task is to open an Administrator-level command prompt and run "sfc /scannow" (without the quotes). Windows will run the System File Checker and it's possible that it may find and repair something buried down deep in the OS. Doing this is beneficial and will let us rule out a lot of potentially unpleasant issues

The second option deals with the media chain. Take a look at this thread, especially at my post near the middle of the page where I talk about "mulitAVCHD." If you're still stuck, following those steps to install and verify those utilities *may* be the answer. It will also give you another tool to use for re-encoding your source clips.

Sorry for taking a little while to respond, I had to go out for a bit. Things I have done:

    -ran a memory scan, good

    -ran an admin sfc/scannow, good

-followed the directions in your other thread regarding multiAVCHD and have followed the directions exactly (I think) but I keep failing on the VC-1 test.

That always happens. Look carefully at this thread, especially when they get to step 8. This link was referenced on the other PD discussion, but it's easy to overlook.

I'm glad that the SFC results were good. Let's see if getting the final VC-1 portion makes a difference!

    Try this one.

The related apps have been updated since the tutorials were written, but the important settings are still recognizable. I honestly don't know if VC-1 is in play with your PD12 issue, but you're probably just a setting or two from finishing this step.

    Let's see what happens...

Quick update - I decided to try and reinstall my video card drivers and got a series of fatal errors. Something has gone very wrong with my system.
