Attached are two clips from the Retro-8 film scanner.

One is from 1942, black and white, of me. The second is in color done in the 70's some time.

Alan

Sorry they are a little late - wife had stuff for me to do.

Hi CubbyHouseFilms,

On a thread "somewhere" acg was asked about capturing 8mm Film and the discussion then moved to what options were available. An expensive and professional option was the "Retro-8 film scanner" which acg was going to "take the plunge" with. The thread is this one, I think: http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/38776.page

As I have an "interest" and a large collection of 8mm film, I was interested in the thread, the capture method and the problems encountered when editing in PDR.

The samples given were to show what the results were like I believe, I'll have to download them to check.

no. The question was about uploading and seeing both files. It seemed like you could not see the second file. I uploaded it separately so there are two uploads for the two files.

A little note:

The enclosed two files are in the .Mp4 format - whcih is of less quality thene what I actually burn them for production.

I burn them in the .MOV format, at 1080P or viewing on large screens.

The machine works!

For 8mm film that is pretty good capture even though you reduced the original quality by posting MP4 instead of an edited section of MOV video.

Dafydd, your link is broken.

This is the beginning of the conversation he started.
http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/38416.page

Started 18/04/2014.

It has been a very interesting subject. I don't have any film to scan, but I know there are boxes of 8 mm film out there just waiting for someone to digitize.

Here is another LOW cost way of creating a silent movie from 8mm film. I have not tried it. I was looking for a low cost device for scanning some very old negatives and came across this:

They are in attic's, basements, garages and closets of anybody that made 8 mm or super 8 movies in the past.
If you go to garage sales, flea markets, anytime you see a sign on the road about estate sales, you may find boxes of film.

The chances are the projector died years ago, but they still have the film in boxes somewhere.
I knew a person that had film but never was able to get it converted to video.

That person died years ago, everything he owned disappeared.

Hi all,

Thanks Carl, I removed the full stop at the end, link's ok now.

Stevek, I'm not sure about the Wolverine device, the single frame capture would be quite slow maybe for my 8mm/super8 film.

acg, thanks for the clips. and input. The attachment you have made available are very impressive. Outstanding, thank you.

Carl, at least my projectors work great even after all these years (thankfully). It is sad that memories and such are thrown out and lost. We see many historians wanting old footage, to study and save. It may be worth getting hold of any throwaways and cataloging it. If you possess the reels, you own the copyright! There is a film archive museum* here that has been collecting old films to store/restore. *Not sure which archive museum it is.

I want to re-visit my 8and super 8 films. When I copied them some years ago I used an angled device that mirrored the screen so it was at the right angle to record via video camera. I then imported the footage into a video editor.

My main concern now, is cleaning the film before recording and editing to remove any finger smudge etc. Has anyone bitten that bullet?

Dafydd

I clean all the films with film renew cleaner. I use a craig editing wheels to wind the film back and forth. Wash one way and clean off the residue the other way using movie film cleaning pads.

Only takes a fews minutes.

The retro-8 scanner is coming out with a version that will scan 15 frames per second instead of two.

Don't know the price.

I also used the 45 degree angled mirror that reflected the pictuire on a white board - used a variable speed 8mm/s8mm projector. took days to get everything synced up; and always had flickering. lines rrunning through the picture, and the like. Never liked it.

There, at least right now is no comparison in resolution and quality then using a scanner.

Hello,

Want to clarify a statement I made about a new retro-8 coming out.

It appears it is still on the drawing board and if there is a demand in the future it may be produced.

Sorry, if I misled anyone.
